Thomas’ Game Winner Sends #4 Women’s Hockey To 3-2 Triumph Over Bowdoin

Caroline Thomas scored with 13.7 seconds left in Friday's third period, sending the #4 Middlebury women's ice hockey team to an exciting 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Bowdoin. The triumph marks the 750th win in the program's history.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked to strike 2:02 into the first period. Olivia McManus roped a bid from the right point that was saved by the right pad of Polar Bear netminder Sarah Peterson.
  • The Polar Bears had a quality chance at 6:14 while down a skater. Emma Merrill rifled a knuckling puck from the left dot that Sophia Will stopped.
  • Bowdoin buzzed the zone five minutes later, firing a trio of shots over 47 seconds. The best opportunity was the final one, as Luna Lu found space between the circles. Will snared the shot with her glove to keep the Polar Bears off the board.
  • With 16:56 expired, Susannah Ward roped a wrister from the point that Peterson rose and denied to keep the contest scoreless.
  • Lu gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the 10:29 mark of the middle stanza, redirecting a pass from the right dot over the shoulder of Will.
  • Middlebury knotted the contest with 12:40 elapsed. Trinity Walsh skated down the left boards, sending a stick-to-stick pass to Thomas, who tucked her bid into the right side of the net.
  • Bowdoin regained the advantage with 4:05 showing on the clock, as Bella Schifano shoveled in a pass on the doorstep for a 2-1 edge.
  • At 2:52 of the third period, a sharp-angled bid by Charlie Frankenfeld was stonewalled by Will, standing her ground on the post to keep it a one-goal deficit.
  • The Panthers deadlocked the game with 9:35 expired when Britt Nawrocki muscled in a bounding puck on the doorstep.
  • Bowdoin produced a great opportunity two minutes later. Schifano sent a backhanded shot destined for the left post, but Will pushed and slid across to thwart the chance.
  • The sides called their respective timeout in the final minute. After the second stoppage, Avery McInerny won the faceoff which trickled to the stick of Walsh. The rookie sent a pass to the front of the crease, where Thomas went bar down to seal the thrilling 3-2 win.
NOTES
  • Thomas scored twice in the victory, marking the fifth-straight game that she has found the back of the net.
  • McInerny finished with two assists for Middlebury, giving her a point in 11 of the last 15 contests. She also won 17 of her 24 chances at the faceoff dot.
  • Walsh recorded two helpers, moving her into the team lead with 13 this winter.
  • The programs met for the 82nd time with the Panthers owning a 59-17-6 advantage.
