Panthers Earn Thrilling 149-148 Win At Springfield

Andrew Dou claimed a pair of individual wins on Saturday.
The Middlebury men's swimming and diving team battled Springfield in a back-and-forth meet on Saturday, claiming a 149-148 come-from-behind victory. The meet came down to the final event, as the Panthers posted a win and a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay to seal the dual triumph.  
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Paul Shen dominated the breaststroke events, earning top clockings in the 100 and 200-yard races. He logged the first Middlebury victory of the meet in the shorter distance, touching the wall at 58.50. Shen also led the field with the top effort during the 200 at 2:11.01.
  • Andrew Dou tallied a pair of triumphs during the dual. He recorded a winning effort in the 50 free (21.96) and outpaced his competitors in the 100 butterfly (52.58). Prin Chantarangkul was just behind Dou in the 50 free, earning a runner-up finish with a time of 22.21.
  • Picking up individual triumphs in the pool were Luke McNamara in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.09, while Stefanos Salas was victorious in the 200 individual medley (IM) with a clocking of 1:58.12. 
  • Trailing 146-134 entering the 200 free relay, the quartet of Cal Hale, Dou, Chantarrangkul and Mark Pearcy claimed 11 valuable team points at 1:25.91. The runner-up team of Jason Chiappinelli, Matthew Sonne, Nathan Stellmach and Rodin McKenna posted four points with a runner-up clocking of 1:27.21 for the exciting one-point win.
  • Second-place individual showings were tallied by Sonne in the 100 (54.60) and 200 backstrokes (1:59.33), Salas in the 200 fly (2:02.34) and Owen Currie in the 1,000 free (10:15.44).
  • In the free events, McKenna was second in the 100 (48.24), Chiappinelli claimed runner-up honors during the 200 (1:48.05) and Keith Hartman was the second finisher in the 500 (4:58.13).
  • The 200 medley relay team composed of Dou, Shen, McNamara and Chantarangkul was just six-tenths of a second behind the winner, recording a time of 1:36.54.
NOTES
  • Shen's individual wins were the third and fourth of the winter, while Dou tallied his second and third victories.
Middlebury returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Clinton, New York, for a tri-meet at Hamilton with #17 Williams.
