Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

May’s Overtime Winner Sends Middlebury to 2-1 Win at Saint Michael’s

The Middlebury men's ice hockey team scored the golden goal 32 seconds into overtime to secure a 2-1 triumph over Saint Michael's on Tuesday evening.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers peppered Purple Knights goalie Evan Plunkett early, forcing four saves in the first 1:47 of Tuesday's contest. Hans Forselius logged the hosts' initial bid just 25 seconds later that Middlebury netminder Conor Sullivan smothered.
  • The visitors looked to cash in on their first extra skater opportunity with 15:40 remaining in the opening period. Jake Stevens had an attempt blocked by Ty Bloom before Plunkett stonewalled a second shot 15 seconds later, helping the hosts kill the penalty.
  • Revy Mack helped the navy and white nab an early 1-0 lead with 9:15 left in the frame, sending home a one-timer from the slot after a feed from Tyler Wishart on the boards.
  • Sullivan stood tall late in the stanza, denying four Saint Michael's opportunities to maintain the one-goal margin through 20 minutes.
  • The Knights blitzed the Panther goaltender with five shots through three minutes to begin the second session. Roman Winicki and Ben Baxter each clanged a shot off the pipe before Sullivan made a pair of stops to maintain the lead.
  • With 15:11 gone, Bloom started a trio of chances spanning 16 seconds. Sullivan answered the call and denied each bid.
  • Middlebury nearly found the back of the net in the final minutes of the stanza. Max Noll, Stevens and Edward Moskowitz combined for a four-shot flurry, but Plunkett turned away each look to hold the 1-0 edge heading to the third.
  • Quinn McCarthy flipped the bout on its head while down a skater with 15:44 left in regulation, nabbing the puck and darting up the ice before tucking his bid into the back of the net to knot the contest at 1-1.
  • The Panthers hunted the go-ahead goal with urgency, logging a game-high 17 shots-on-goal in the third period. Plunkett stood tall, making 10 saves to force the contest into overtime.
  • Bobby May needed just 32 additional seconds to end the game, flashing through the neutral zone and taking the puck directly to the net before tucking in the game-winner to seal the 2-1 overtime thriller.
NOTES
  • Wishart distributed two assists for the second time as a Panther.
  • Sullivan made a season-high 29 saves in his second career shutout.
  • The programs met for the 40th time with Middlebury owning a 34-4-2 edge, including 14 of the last 15 matchups.
The Panthers dip back into NESCAC play against Williams on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
