Box Score The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team completed three days of competition as hosts of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championships.
Ren Barton claimed the Singles "B" Draw Title to headline the Panther efforts, while
Elsie Van Wieren and
Gusty Beveridge advanced to the Singles "A" Draw quarterfinals.
SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
- Beveridge, Anna Lardner, Diya Pachamuthu and Van Wieren and Lulu Wu each won their respective first match in the round of 64.
- Van Wieren and Beveridge continued beyond the round of 32. Van Wieren tallied a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Wesleyan's Agnes Guggenheim, while Beverdige took down 9-16 seed Lara Afolayanka (6-2, 7-5).
- The pair battled through the bracket. Van Wieren earned her place among the final eight in a straight-sets decision (6-0, 7-5) against Bowdoin's Suzanne Pogorelec before bowing out to top-seeded Matia Cristiani of Babson in a three-set marathon. Beveridge emerged victorious from a marathon match, winning with scores of 3-6, 7-6 (3), and 7-6 (4) over Tufts' Athena Li.
- Beveridge took her match against Zoe Sun of Bowdoin to a decisive third but could not pull off the win.
- Barton carved her way through the secondary draw, winning four consecutive matches to set up a battle with Huayi Zhang of Brandeis in the championship. The rookie got the job done, outlasting Zhang in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 11-9).
DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
- Lardner and Barton nabbed an 8-5 win in the round of 64 before dropping a hard-fought 8-7 decision to the Wesleyan pairing of Sarah Youngberg/Mariia Kornilova.
- Earning the fifth seed in the draw, Wu and Van Wieren earned an 8-4 win in the doubles round of 32 after a bye to begin in the bracket before bowing out in the round of 16.
NOTES
- Wu eclipsed the 50-win threshold in doubles.
Middlebury wraps up its fall slate at the three-day Bowdoin Invitational next weekend.
