#7 Men’s Tennis Claims Three Titles During Middlebury Invitational

Box Score The #7 Panther men's tennis team opened the fall portion of its schedule by hosting the Middlebury Invitational. The tournament featured five teams competing in singles and doubles action, highlighted by Panther players earning titles in the "C" singles bracket and both the "A" and "B" doubles brackets.
 
SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
  • The "C" bracket featured Andrew Yim, who cruised into the semifinal round with straight-set victories over his first two opponents. In the semifinals, Yim dropped the first set 7-5 before claiming the second 6-3. He advanced to the final with a 10-7 decision in the superbreaker. Yim edged Hamilton's Alejandro Fernandez by tallies of 6-4, 6-3 to claim the crown.
  • Justin Zhou started his Middlebury career on a strong note in the bracket, tallying a 6-4, 6-2 win to advance to the quarterfinals.
  • Three Panthers competed in the "A" bracket of 16. Julian Wu, the #1 seed, breezed past his opponents by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3 scores before falling in the semifinals to fourth-seeded Tarun Korwar of Hamilton in a three-set marathon (6-2, 4-6, 10-6)
  • Noah Lewis reached the semifinal round, needing three sets in each of his first two matches before falling in straight sets to eventual champion Daniel Shemesh of Brandeis.
  • Reif Larsen recorded a straight-set 6-4, 6-0 victory in his first match of the season.
  • The "B" bracket saw Nathan Jackson tally a decisive 6-1, 6-4 triumph in his initial round followed by a 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 victory in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals.
  • Sidney Huet slipped past his opponent in the opening round but fell in the quarterfinals in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 10-7) to Brandeis' Huasen Dong.
DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
  • The tandem of Wu and Lewis, seeded third in the "A" bracket, posted an 8-5 opening-round win and an 8-3 triumph in the quarterfinals. The Panther pair was victorious 8-4 in the semifinal round before securing the title via an 8-3 score over Skidmore's Kyle Lundberg and Ege Topbas to earn the title.
  • The top-seeded duo of Huet and Nathan Hernandez in the "B" draw received an opening-round bye before earning 8-5 and 8-3 decisions in the quarterfinals and semifinals. The Middlebury team picked up the championship in an 8-7 (3) battle with outlasted Benjamin Kotzen and Muaz Malik from Brandeis.
  • The teams of Hugh Hentschel and Yim, along with Larsen and Anand Sahasrabudhe, tallied opening-round triumphs in the "A" bracket.
NOTES
  • Yim went a perfect 4-0 in his initial collegiate singles action.
The Panthers return to the court on October 3-5 when they travel to Medford, Massachusetts for the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Tufts.
