Men’s Golf Earns Third at 41st Annual Duke Nelson Invitational

The Middlebury men's golf team stormed back from a tie for sixth place to claim third out of 20 teams at the 41st annual Duke Nelson Invitational, posting a score of 598. Amherst shot a 584 to claim the team title, while Babson took second by just four strokes.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Charlie Schulman led the charge for Middlebury. After shooting a 76 on Saturday, the senior shaved six strokes off his score with a one-under 70 during the final 18 holes to earn sixth.
  • Finishing two spots behind Schulman was Logan Wang, who rose from 46th after the first day to eighth after tallying a two-under 69 on Sunday.
  • Rookie Evan Fulgieri claimed 24th with a 151. Fulgieri netted five birdies in the final round.
  • Brendan O'Holleran earned 41st to close the Panther scoring.
NOTES
  • Wang's two-under round on Sunday was his career low.
  • As an individual, Lincoln Mackay tied for fifth at the end of day one, shooting a two-over 73 in the opening round. He earned a top-20 finish (19th), shooting six-over par in the second round.
  • The finish is Middlebury's best in its annual season opener since claiming second in 2022.
  • Duke Nelson graduated from Middlebury in 1932 and served as a naval officer in World War II. When Duke returned to his alma mater, he was the head football, men's ice hockey and men's golf coach, as well as an assistant athletic director. He became the athletic director in 1956 and held that role until retirement in 1969. Following his death in 1989, late athletic director Russ Reilly named the invitational in honor of Duke.
The Panthers return to the course next weekend at the Williams Fall Invitational. The two-day tournament begins on Saturday, September 20 at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
