Middlebury Quintet Earns CSC Academic All-District Praise

Five Panthers earned all-district honors.

Five members of the Middlebury men's cross country and track and field programs earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District praises. Drew Donahue, Ziggy Goddard, Sam McGarrahan, Dan Urchuk and Zach Utz landed places on the squad.

HONOREE HIGHLIGHTS

Donahue

  • Donahue graduated in May with a degree in computer science and economics and secured his initial all-district nod.
  • The Panther earned All-NESCAC Second Team laurels during the cross country season, finishing 8th at the conference championship.
  • The captain followed that performance with all-region honors with a 20th-place showing before claiming a spot inside the top-100 at the NCAA Championships. 
  • During the winter season, Donahue was a member of the distance medley relay (DMR) team that finished in ninth place with a clocking of 10:02.88 to earn All-American distinction.
  • He crossed the finish line with a school-record time of 8:15.73 in the 3,000-meter run during the Division III New England Championships. 
  • The senior ranked among the top-10 times in the Mideast region in numerous events, including sixth in the mile (4:14.14) and seventh in the 3,000 to go alongside seventh in the 1,500 (3:52.03) and 10th in the 5,000 (14:36.97) in the spring. 
  • Donahue earned five USTFCCCA All-Region accolades and was a five-time participant in the NCAA Championships, with three in cross country and two in track and field.
  • He has been named a NESCAC All-Academic selection on six occasions and selected twice as a USTFCCCA All-Academic recipient.

Goddard

  • Goddard earns his second CSC Academic All-District accolade after walking across the stage with a degree in environmental sciences and earth and climate sciences.
  • The Panther excelled in the fall, clocking the sixth-quickest time of 24:58.90 to secure All-NESCAC First Team accolades.
  • Goddard ran to his third-straight all-region nod, claiming 13th with a showing of 24:57.00. He is a four-time NCAA Championship participant.
  • The momentum continued into the winter, as the senior earned All-American honors in the mile (4:11.98) with an eighth-place effort.
  • Goddard posted a school-record time of 3:48.48 in the 1,500 this spring at the MIT Final Qualifier.
  • He concluded his season with a strong finish outdoors, securing All-NESCAC praise with a runner-up clocking in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:12.41). That time was the fastest in the Mideast region. 
  • Goddard claimed five USTFCCCA All-Region accolades during his career.  
  • He is a nine-time NESCAC All-Academic honoree and recipient of three USTFCCCA All-Academic awards.

McGarrahan

  • McGarrahan earned his Middlebury degree in geography and economics and lands a spot on the all-district list for the first time in his career.
  • The Panther excelled in the jumping events this season, rewriting the record books in the high jump and the long jump. He cleared the bar indoors at 2.05 meters and outdoors at a height of 2.00m, while hitting the sand indoors at 6.81m.
  • McGarrahan qualified for the  NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing 18th in the high jump with a mark of 1.95m.
  • During the spring, the Panther claimed the NESCAC crown and all-conference accolades in the high jump (2.00m) alongside a third-place showing in the long jump (6.88m).
  • He posted the best heights in the Mideast region during both campaigns in the high jump. The Panther ranked in the top-10 spots in the long jump outdoors (seventh) and indoors (ninth)..
  • McGarrahan garnered all-region praise in the winter and spring in the high jump and is a six-time NESCAC All-Academic recipient.

Urchuk

  • Urchuk graduated with a degree in economics and computer science and tallied his second CSC Academic All-District laurel.
  • He finished the year among the top-five throwers regionally in the shot put and hammer throw. The Panther was second indoors in the shot put with a collegiate-best throw of 15.51m and third outdoors at 15.23m. He was fifth in the hammer with a distance of 52.56m.
  • Urchuk landed sixth among regional peers in the discus with a season-best toss of 44.50m, while his weight throw heave of 15.72m was 10th.
  • He is a two-time All-NESCAC honoree in the discus and finished fourth in the event this spring.
  • Urchuk earned USTFCCCA Mideast All-Region outdoor laurels twice in the shot put and hammer.
  • He holds the school record indoors in the shot put with a throw of 15.51m set during the Division III New Championships.
  • The Middlebury thrower was lauded for his work in the classroom, earning six NESCAC All-Academic awards.

Utz

  • Utz is majoring in biology and environmental studies and secured his first CSC Academic All-District accolade.
  • During the indoor campaign, he was a member of the Middlebury distance medley relay team that ranked third in the region (9:54.22). The quartet garnered All-American praise with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships (10:02.88).
  • Utz earned his place in the top-20 slots regionally this season in the mile indoors, which was converted due to a banked track (ninth - 4:15.88). Transitioning outdoors, the Panther posted a career-best run in the 1,500 of 3:55.03 to rank 16th in the Mideast, while his season-best 800 time of 1:55.03 was 18th.
  • The rising senior ran a leg on the school-record 4x800 relay last spring that crossed the line with a runner-up and All-NESCAC clocking of 7:39.26.
  • Utz is a two-time USTFCCCA All-Region recipient as a member of the DMR.
  • Off the track, he has been recognized four times as an Academic All-NESCAC award winner.
