Han’s Walkoff Hit Caps 5-4 Comeback Win In NESCAC Championship Weekend Opener

Trailing 4-1 after six innings, the Middlebury baseball team rattled off four runs, highlighted by a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth by Aiden Han, for a 5-4 triumph in the opening game of the NESCAC Championship weekend.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Bantams struck for three runs in the top of the third inning. Dylan Schnitzer and Andrew Park roped back-to-back RBI singles, while Aidan Stern had a run-scoring groundout for a 3-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers sliced the deficit to 3-1 in the home half of the frame. Brayden Mathews singled and moved to third on a double off the bat of Carter Chi. Mathews scampered home on an RBI ground ball from Han.
  • Trinity loaded the bases in their next at-bat, but Middlebury pitcher Charlie Kutz struck out the side to keep it a two-run contest.
  • In the sixth, the Bantams pushed their lead back to three (4-1) on a run-scoring groundout by Park.
  • The Panthers pulled within one (4-3) in the next frame on a pair of unearned tallies. Cooper Bohlig was inserted as a pinch runner and scored on a grounder by Mathews, while Chi ripped a two-out single up the middle to push across Gus Parker.
  • Middlebury started its game-winning rally with one out in the ninth. Parker roped a base knock to right and scampered to third on a double by Mathews before scoring on a Bantam miscue to knot the contest at 4-4. Han was the hero for the Panthers, plating Mathews on  a looping base knock down the left-field line for the thrilling 5-4 victory.
NOTES
  • Han, Mathews and Chi each had multi-hit games, while Parker and Mathews scored twice.
  • Dylan Knightly picked up his fourth win of the spring. He hurled the final 2.1 innings without allowing a hit and struck out three.
  • With the triumph, the Panthers eclipsed the 25-win plateau for the fifth full season in a row.
  • The programs played for the 39th time. Middlebury and Trinity have met six times in the NESCAC Tournament, with the Panthers holding a 5-1 advantage. Friday's matchup was the first time the sides played in the conference's championship weekend.
With Friday's win in the double-elimination tournament, the Panthers face the winner of Williams and Colby on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
