Filias & Swann Crowned New England Champions

Tony Wang finished 11th in the triple jump.
The Middlebury men's track and field team finished in fifth place out of 34 teams at the Division III Outdoor New England Championship. The Panthers were led by Dave Filias and Xander Swann who were crowned champions in the hammer throw and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Wesleyan claimed the team title with 80 points, followed by Tufts (74.5 points) and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (65.5 points). 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Filias led Middlebury with his first-place finish on Friday. The Panther recorded a toss of 57.82 meters which was nearly five meters further than the runner-up. Dan Urchuk placed 12th in the event with a toss of 48.39m. 
  • Swann broke the tape in the 400 hurdles, stopping the clock in 52.26 seconds. Joey Caspar was right behind in second (54.06 seconds) as both eclipsed the previous facility record of 54.11 seconds. 
  • The top-four times in the 400 surpassed Coast Guard's record of 48.62 seconds. Emerson Kington was part of that group, finishing in third with a season-best time of 48.43 seconds.
  • Donnell Harvey Jr. and Marco Motroni both advanced to the finals in the 100. Harvey Jr. placed fourth with a clocking of 10.76 seconds, while Motroni was two spots back (10.81 seconds). 
  • Harvey Jr. and Mortroni teamed up with Kington and Hayden Bobowick in the 4x100 relay. The quartet combined for a fourth-place time of 42.10 seconds. 
  • Kington and Bobowick joined Caspar and Swann for the 4x400 relay, clocking in at 3:16.37 to finish in third. The squad was one of six teams to eclipse the previous facility record of 3:19.56.
  • Rounding out the competitors was Tony Wang in the triple jump. The Panther finished in 11th, hitting the sand at 13.61m. 
NOTES
  • The top-eight finishers in each event garnered all-region honors.
Middlebury will have competitors compete at both the Farley Intra Regional Extravaganza hosted by Williams and the Open New England Championship at the University of Massachusetts Amherst next weekend.
