Farhat & Raman Move Into Semifinals At NCAAs

Farhat and Raman have 29 victories as a duo this season.

Nina Farhat and Sahana Raman of the fifth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team punched their ticket to the doubles semifinals at the NCAA Individual Championships in Claremont, California. Raman and Elsie Van Wieren also participated in the singles bracket. 

SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Raman matched up with New York University's Jimena Menendez in the opening round. The Panther claimed the initial set 7-5 before falling by the same score in the second. Menendez secured the third 6-4 to claim the victory.
  • In her first individual championships, Van Wieren battled Emily Kantrovitz of Emory, falling in straight sets (6-4, 6-1).

DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Farhat and Raman squared off against the tandem of Karina Elvestrom and Kaya De Bruijn of Gustavus Adolphus College in the round of 16. The Panther duo, who are the top seed in the draw, cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 triumph.
  • In Saturday's quarterfinal, the pair met Izabele Antanavicius and Iris Berman from Emory. After being deadlocked at 6-6 in the opening set, the duo surged ahead in the tiebreaker with a 7-1 result. And after dropping the first three games in the second, Farhat and Raman tallied six-straight points to earn a 6-3 triumph and a trip to the semifinals.

NOTES

  • Farhat reached the 70-win doubles mark with the victory in the quarterfinals. 
  • The Panther duo, who are the top-ranked pairing in the latest ITA rankings, have won 19 of their last 21 matches.
  • Van Wieren participated in her first NCAA Individual Championships and finished her rookie campaign with a 23-6 mark.

Farhat and Raman move on to the national semifinals, where they meet Pomona Pitzer's Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou on Monday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. The two sides met during Middlebury's spring break trip earlier this season, with the Panther pair grinding out a 7-6 (7-2) victory.
