Baseball Grinds Out 6-5 Win Over #19 Cortland In NCAA Regional Opener

The Middlebury baseball team quickly grabbed a six-run advantage (6-0) in the top of the third inning and never gave it back in a 6-5 victory over #19 Cortland in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kyle McCausland gave the Panthers a 1-0 edge to begin the contest with a solo home run over the left-center wall.
  • The Red Dragons threatened in the bottom half, loading the bases with two outs. Emmet George induced a groundout to shortstop to get out of the jam.
  • Middlebury added to its lead during the third, tallying five runs to grab a 6-0 lead. Nathan Samii smacked an RBI single through the left side that plated a pair and Ben Slaughter lifted a three-run homer to left field.
  • Cortland put together a rally with two outs in the fourth stanza. A run-scoring base knock from JJ DeLawder swelled into five tallies to cut the Panther advantage to 6-5.
  • In the sixth, Joe Basso sent a single up the middle and Carter Chi forced a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Luis Misla forced a groundout to keep Middlebury's lead at one.
  • After Gus Parker worked a leadoff walk in the top of the eighth, Brayden Mathews recorded a sacrifice bunt and Basso flied out to right to push Parker to third. The outfielder could not cross the plate, as reliever Tommy Lynch induced an inning-ending groundout.
  • The Red Dragons tried to tie the contest in their last at-bat, but Stefano Yozzo sent down Cortland in order to claim his fourth save of the year and the 6-5 victory.

NOTES

  • With his solo blast, McCausland becomes the first player in program history to eclipse 200 hits.
  • Sammi led the way with a 3-of-5 outing, including his 17th double of the season, putting him second in the single-season record books. He also collected his 100th career RBI.
  • Dylan Knightly and Yozzo hurled a combined four innings of no-hit baseball while allowing just two base runners out of the bullpen.
  • Middlebury and Cortland met for the first time in baseball.

The Panthers move on to the winner's bracket, where they take on #9 Kean on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
