Balanced Offense & Strong Pitching Push Baseball Past RPI 12-2

The Middlebury baseball team scored three runs in four separate innings and struck out a season-high 17 batters on Wednesday, securing a 12-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Engineers took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run single to left-center field by Alex Coombes.
  • Aiden Han and Kyle McCausland started the bottom of the frame with back-to-back walks before jogging home on a three-run roundtripper off the bat of Nathan Samii to left center for a 3-2 edge.
  • The Panthers increased their lead to four (6-2) in the third. Samii led off with a triple to right and scored on a base hit to right from Ben Slaughter. A few batters later, Will Ashley brought home Slaughter and Gus Parker on a single to left.
  • Middlebury tacked on a trio of tallies in the fifth. Isaac Rosario ripped a two-run base knock to center, while Ashley tallied a sacrifice fly to make it 9-2.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, the Panthers pushed the advantage to 10 (12-2) with three runs, highlighted by run-scoring at-bats by Brayden Matthews and Brian Olson.
  • Charlie Kutz came on to pitch the ninth, striking out three of the four batters he faced for the final 12-2 decision.
NOTES
  • Samii continued his torrid stretch at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a homer, triple and two singles. He scored three times and paced Middlebury with four RBI.
