Men’s Track and Field Edges Amherst To Claim NESCAC Championship

Middlebury claims the 2025 NESCAC Championship.
The Middlebury men's track and field team claimed the program's third NESCAC Championship. The Panthers tallied 169 points, edging Amherst by five points to earn the crown. Tufts rounded out the top-three with 119 points.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sam McGarrahan was crowned the league's champion in the high jump with a record-breaking leap of 2.00 meters, surpassing the previous record of 1.98m set by Khristoph Becker in 2005. Caleb Smith (1.90m) and Drew McStay (1.80m) finished in third and eighth, respectively.
  • The quartet of Marco Motroni, Emerson Kington, Hayden Bobowick, and Donnell Harvey Jr. secured the 4x100-meter relay crown with a time of 41.54 seconds. The clocking is a school record, eclipsing the previous mark of 41.88 seconds from 2023. 
  • Xander Swann earned gold in the 400, achieving a personal best time of 47.92 seconds. Kington finished in sixth place with his quickest clocking of the season at 48.64 seconds.
  • In the hammer throw, Dave Filias hoisted the trophy with a launch of 57.47m. Dan Urchuk picked up fourth with a hurl of 50.47m, while Darnel Cineas (47.23m) finished in eighth.
  • Two Panthers achieved top-five finishes in the 100. Harvey Jr. stood atop the podium with a time of 10.79 seconds, while Motroni secured fourth with a clocking of 10.94 seconds.
  • The 4x800 relay squad comprised of Zach Utz, Lachlan Bishop, Cameron Miles and Will Lavey earned runner-up laurels with a clocking of 7:39.26.
  • Ziggy Goddard recorded a season-best time of 9:12.41 in the 3,000 steeplechase, finishing in second place.
  • Middlebury had three runners in the top 10 during the 400 hurdles. Swann finished second with a personal record time of 51.96 seconds, while Joey Caspar (53.54) and Nate Gardner (55.75) placed fourth and ninth, respectively. Caspar's clocking was also a career-best.
  • The team of Kington, Bobowick, Caspar, and Swann placed third in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:17.09.
  • Three Panthers secured top-five finishes in the shot put. Logan Cosgrove led the group with a runner-up mark of 14.83m. Filias (14.71m) and Urchuk (14.38m) rounded out the group in third and fifth.
  • In the 110 hurdles, Quinn Kennedy claimed silver in 14.89 seconds, while Finn Albright finished seventh in 15.13 seconds.
  • In the long jump, McGarrahan placed third with a distance of 6.88m. Smith grabbed fourth at 6.78m, and was fifth in the javelin with a launch of 51.33m. 
  • Urchuk finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 43.61m, while Ben Martin took sixth with a toss of 42.92m.
  • Drew Donahue completed the 5,000 in 14:42.30 to finish sixth, while Goddard achieved a personal best time of 14:44.17 to secure eighth.
  • In the pole vault, Caden Cote finished ninth, clearing a height of 4.10m.
  • Zach Utz completed the 1,500 in 3:58.07, finishing in tenth place.
  • Motroni (22.34) and Kington (22.39) finished ninth and tenth in the 200m, respectively.
  • A trio of Panthers finished in the top-10 spots in the triple jump. Jed Nelson led the group with a fifth-place leap of 13.78m. Tony Wang was seventh (13.73m), followed by Sam Opawuyi in eighth (13.71m).

  • The team had five individual champions and broke two school records over the day. 
  • The Panthers claimed NESCAC Titles in 2018 and 2019. 
Middlebury travels to Connecticut on Friday for the Division III Outdoor New England Championships at 11:45 a.m.
