Opawuyi & Swann Set Program Records At Middlebury Invitational

The team honored the program's 17 seniors on Saturday.
Panthers Sam Opawuyi and Xander Swann broke a pair of school records as the men's track and field team hosted its Middlebury Invitational on Saturday. Prior to the meet, the team honored the program's 17 seniors.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury had the top three places in the triple jump. Opawuyi earned gold with a distance of 13.95 meters, while Jed Nelson (13.36m) and Sam McGarrahan (13.03m) earned silver and bronze.
  • The Panthers also achieved the top three finishes in the 400-meter hurdles. Swann led the field with his winning time of 52.52 seconds. Joey Caspar tallied runner-up honors at 54.96 seconds, while Nate Gardner (55.63) claimed bronze.
  • The team of Marco Motroni, Emerson Kington, Hayden Bobowick, and Donnell Harvey Jr. finished first in the 4x100 relay with a time of 42.10 seconds. 
  • Middlebury occupied the top three spots in the 1,500 with Ziggy Goddard (3:59.99), Benjamin Prestes (4:00.21), and Solomon McDow (4:01.69) sweeping the podium.
  • In the 110 hurdles, Quinn Kennedy placed first with a time of 15.57 seconds. Finn Albright and Caleb Smith each crossed the line at 15.74 seconds, but Albright was six one-thousandths of a second faster to grab second. 
  • In the 200, Harvey Jr. secured gold with a clocking of 22.77 seconds. Aidan Castanon (22.78) and Kington (22.81) closed out the top-three spots for the Panthers.
  • Motroni finished first overall in the 100, crossing the line at 10.85 seconds.
  • The Panthers took first and third place in the long jump. Smith claimed top honors with a distance of 6.60m, while Nelson was two spots behind at 6.25m.
  • In the pole vault, Caden Cote achieved first overall by clearing a height of 4.25m, while Robert Altavilla placed third with a clearance of 3.80m.
  • Middlebury secured the top three spots in the shot put. Logan Cosgrove took first with a distance of 14.59m, while Dan Urchuk (14.53m) and Calvin Szoradi (13.62m) finished second and third overall. 
  • Zach Utz (1:55.03) and Cameron Miles (1:56.62) claimed second and third, respectively, in the 800.
  • In the hammer throw, Dave Filias finished as the runner-up with a distance of 58.14m, while Urchuk earned bronze at 51.26m.
  • Smith placed second in the javelin by throwing the implement 51.50m.
  • Drew McStay and McGarrahan cleared a height of 1.85m in the high jump to finish in second and third, respectively. McStay edged McGarrahan by clearing the bar in one attempt.
  • The Panthers swept the discus with Ben Martin claiming top honors with a throw of 43.93 meters. Eli Goumas (40.39m) and Urchuk (40.19m) claimed runner-up and third place to seal the last podium sweep.
  • The relay team of Daryl Edwards, Isaiah Izzo Lizardi, McGarrahan, and Santi Canella placed second in the 4x400 with a time of 3:31.42.
NOTES
  • Opawuyi's triple jump distance resets his program record of 13.93m recorded at the Aztec Invitational earlier this spring.
  • Swann broke the Allan Dragone Track & Field Complex record in the 400 hurdles with his time of 52.52 seconds. The previous record dated back to 2006 and was held by Kevin Bright who clocked a time of 53.45.
Middlebury travels to Wesleyan on Saturday for the NESCAC Championship, which begins at 9:00 a.m.
