Baseball Squeaks Out 3-2 Win Over Plattsburgh State In Extra Innings

 The Middlebury baseball team scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to squeak past Plattsburgh State 3-2. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • With two outs in the top of the second, the Cardinals tried to get things going. Frankie Kowal walked and advanced to third on a single down the right-field line by Joey Di Rocco. Jack Castillo recorded the final out to keep Plattsburgh State off the board.
  • Middlebury threatened in its half of the inning. Owen Fox and Anthony Pellagrini walked a batter apart, and each advanced a base on a wild pitch, but the Cardinals were able to get out of the jam as the game remained scoreless.
  • The Panthers broke through in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 1-0 edge. Joe Basso doubled down the left-field line before coming home on an RBI single to right center by Will Ashley.
  • Several Middlebury miscues in the fifth inning allowed Zach Rainville to scamper home and knot the contest 1-1.
  • The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in their half of the inning. Carter Chi walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and sprinted home from second when Nathan Samii knocked a base hit up the middle.
  • Plattsburgh State deadlocked the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh. With two outs on the board, Aidan Diltz singled, stole second, and crossed home plate on a base knock up the middle from Colin Ross.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Kyle McCausland tried to get things going with a triple to left center, but the Cardinals recorded back-to-back outs to keep the contest tied.
  • With one out in the top of the ninth, the Cardinals nearly stole the game. Alex Kornblau walked to load the bases, but the Panthers recorded a double play to get out unscathed
  • After a 1-2-3 top half by the visitors, the Panthers struck. With the bases loaded, Fox brought Samii home with a fielders choice for the 3-2 win.. 
NOTES
  • The programs played for the first time since 2019 and the 16th meeting overall with Middlebury owning a 12-4 advantage in the all-time series that began in 1904.
The Panthers hit the road on Friday, opening their NESCAC slate with a three-game series at Amherst.
