The Middlebury men's ice hockey team surrendered a first-period goal to Wesleyan on Saturday, but the Panthers tallied three unanswered tallies to earn a 3-1 triumph. The win completed the season sweep against the Cardinals after Middlebury won 5-4 in late January.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers looked to get on the scoreboard 50 seconds into the game, but Wyatt Pastor's attempt whistled over the shoulder of Cardinal goalie Patrick McDevitt.
- Wesleyan scored on the power play with 2:47 expired in the frame when Connor Sutherland muscled in a rebound from a sharp angle for the 1-0 lead.
- With 2:01 showing on the clock, the hosts looked to increase their advantage. Jake Geraci raced through the neutral zone and rifled a bid that was saved by Panther goalie Andrew Heinze who stood his ground on the post.
- Following a faceoff win in the offensive zone, Jack Silverman skated onto a loose puck between the circles. His rising shot was saved by McDevitt's to keep it a one-goal contest.
- Middlebury had a quality chance with five minutes expired in the second frame, but a one-timer from the high slot by Bobby May was snared by the glove of McDevitt.
- Three minutes later at the 8:35 mark, Heinze sprawled across his crease to deny back-to-back chances from Patrick Morrissey and Ethan Davidson in the waning seconds of a Wesleyan power play.
- The Panthers knotted the contest at 1-1 with 4:26 left on a great individual effort from Reece Brednich. He secured a bouncing puck behind his own goal, skated the length of the ice and made a nifty move from his backhand to forehand. Brednich calmly lifted a shot over the shoulder of McDevitt to even the score.
- The visitors took advantage of an extra skater with 8:49 gone in the third stanza. Silverman made a beautiful cross-crease pass to Pastor who one-timed the puck into the net for the 2-1 edge.
- Skating four-on-three just over four minutes later, Middlebury added an insurance goal when Silverman tipped in a shot from the point by Christian Wood for a 3-1 advantage with 7:27 left.
- The Cardinals pulled McDevitt with 2:03 remaining in favor of an extra skater, but the hosts were unable to muster any quality chances as the Panthers secured the 3-1 triumph.
NOTES
- Silverman has scored a goal in four of the last five games and has nine points during that stretch (4G, 5A).
- The programs played for the 64th meeting with Middlebury holding a 44-15-5 advantage in the all-time series.
The Panthers return to action on Friday when they travel to Massachusetts for a 7:00 p.m. contest against Williams.
