Men’s Hockey Travels to #14 Trinity For NESCAC Quarterfinals

The Panthers celebrate a goal earlier this season against Colby.

The Middlebury men's ice hockey team has earned the seventh seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. The squad travels to Connecticut to face second-seeded/#14 Trinity in quarterfinal action on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

ABOUT MIDDLEBURY

  • The Panthers are making their 22nd appearance in the NESCAC Tournament.
  • Middlebury has a 32-13 overall record in the conference playoffs, which is the second-most wins compared to the Bantams (35). 
  • The squad is seeking its ninth conference crown, with its last NESCAC Title coming in 2010. 
  • Middlebury has reached the semifinal round 15 times, most recently during the 2023-24 season.

PANTHERS TO WATCH

  • Jackson Morehouse has built off a strong first-year campaign, leading the team in goals (10), assists (12) and points (22). The forward has tallied at least one point in 13 contests, including a career-high five (3G, 2A) against St. Michael's. He comes off a two-goal, one-assist performance to help the Panthers to a 4-2 upset win over then-#11 Hamilton on Saturday.
  • Revy Mack sits second on the squad in goals (9), assists (11) and points (20). The sophomore has tallied five multi-point performances with two coming against the Bantams earlier this season.
  • Having a breakout rookie campaign has been Jack Silverman, tallying 17 points on eight goals and nine assists. Over the last 10 contests, he has wracked up 12 points, with four (1G, 3A) coming in a 6-0 triumph over Connecticut College on February 1. 
  • Dante Palombo shares second on the squad in assists (11), alongside six goals in 24 contests this season. The second-year skater comes off a three-point weekend (2G, 1A) against Amherst and Hamilton. Captain Jin Lee has recorded at least one point in three of the last five games with a goal and assist coming in the regular season finale against the Continentals. 
  • Defensively, Christian Wood has blocked a team-best 38 shots this winter in his first season with the Panthers. Jake Oblak is right behind Wood, smothering 32 shots and  the best plus/minus (+13) of any defender on the squad.
  • Protecting the crease with 20 starts this season has been netminder Andrew Heinze. The goaltender owns a .921 save percentage and leads the conference with four shutouts. Heinze has tallied 30 or more saves nine times, in addition to being named NESCAC Player of the Week twice.

ABOUT TRINITY

  • The Bantams come into the weekend 16-6-2 overall and have victories in four of their last six contests.
  • Trinity has reached the NESCAC Tournament 23 times and holds a conference-best 35-16 record in tournament action.
  • The Bantams are attempting to claim their eighth conference crown and second straight after hoisting the trophy a season ago as the top seed.
  • This year, Trinity leads the conference in assists (136), while sitting second in goals scored (85), power-play goals (19) and save percentage (.922). The squad has given up the second-least goals this season with 51.

BANTAMS TO WATCH

  • The duo of Spencer Korona and Ty Broad have been a problem for opposing defenses all season. Korona leads the team and is second in the conference with 23 assists and 28 points. Broad has a team-high 11 goals alongside nine assists for 20 points. He tallied twice in the Bantam's weekend sweep over Wesleyan.
  • James Barbour (8G, 10A) and Chase McInnis (5G, 13A) each have 18 points. McInnis recorded two assists in Trinity's 5-0 shutout over the Cardinals on Friday. 
  • The Bantam's defense is led by the sophomore tandem of Jakob Karpa and Joseph Harney. Karpa has blocked a team-high 28 shots and has contributed eight points, including two goals and six assists. Harney has also smothered 28 shots over 24 contests and has contributed six points (2G, 4A).
  • Devon Bobak has been a brick wall in the crease for Trinity. The netminder has tallied over 1,440 minutes this season with a .926 save percentage. Bobak has made the second-most saves in the conference (604) alongside a 2.00 goals against average.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Middlebury and Trinity meet for the 54th time with the Bantams holding a 29-20-4 lead in the all-time series.
  • The programs have battled twice this season with Trinity claiming both by 4-2 scorelines.
  • The programs have faced off six times in NESCAC Tournament action with each claiming three triumphs.
  • This marks the first meeting in the quarterfinal round.
