Middlebury Edged By Dartmouth, Finishes As Runner-Up At Home Carnival

Christner grabbed third and fourth place finishes over the weekend.
The Panther ski teams led by 6.5 points after the first day of action at the Middlebury Carnival, but unbeaten Dartmouth came from behind to claim the title. The Big Green tallied 898 points to earn the crown, followed by the Panthers with their most points since 2019 (877.5). The University of Vermont rounded out the top-three with 722.5 points.
 
 NORDIC WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • The women's squad dominated the sprint on Friday with five Panthers in the top-20 spots.
  • Leading the way was Maggie Wagner with a clocking of 4:01.49 for fourth overall.
  • Also qualifying for the finals was Quincy Massey-Bierman, finishing in fifth with a time of 4:01.57.
  • In the first semifinal heat, Shea Brams had the third-fastest time (3:57.44) to propel her to seventh overall.  
  • On Saturday, Brams grabbed a spot on the 10K classic podium. The Panther finished in third with a time of 28:56.0.
  • Mica Bodkins (29:56.8) and Sofia Scirica (30:01.9) placed 11th and 12th, respectively.
NORDIC MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Finishing just off the podium in the sprints was Jack Christner, clocking in at 3:24.24 in the finals to place fourth. 
  • Mason Wheeler qualified for the semifinals, posting a 3:19.44 to finish in sixth overall.
  • Rounding out the scorers was Logan Moore, placing 12th with his fastest time of the day (3:19.48) coming in the qualifying round. 
  • Christner and Moore led the way for Middlebury in the 10K classic individual start on Saturday. Moore was second with a clocking of 24:41.9, while Christner was third (24:48.4). 
  • Wheeler cracked the top-15 spots with a 14th-place showing (25:33.8).  
ALPINE WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • In her home carnival debut in the navy and white, Kjersti Moritz finished as the runner-up in the slalom, completing her two trips down in 1:36.54.
  • Also finishing in the top-10 were Sophia Tozzi in seventh (1:37.10) and Mika-Anne Reha in ninth (1:37.55), as the trio combined for the most points in the event (113).
  • Moritz returned to the mountain on Saturday, claiming the crown in the giant slalom (GS) with a two-trip time of 2:02.61.
  • Reha finished in 20th (2:05.64), while Tozzi was 25th (2:06.15).
ALPINE MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Adding another slalom victory to his resume was Bradshaw Underhill, tallying a winning time of 1:31.25.
  • Nicholas Unkovskoy tied for ninth place, recording a two-run clocking of 1:32.98.
  • Cracking the top-20 spots was Milan Novak with a combined time of 1:33.52.
  • Underhill continued his winning ways on Saturday, standing atop the podium in the GS with a combined clocking of 1:58.62. 
  • Also finishing on the podium was Unkovskoy, who finished less than a second behind Underhill (1:59.15) to earn runner-up status.
  • Rounding out the scorers was Axel Bailey in 12th, combining for a time of 2:00.64.

NOTES
  • This marked the first time this season that the squad led after one day of action.
  • Underhill has won seven of 10 races this winter and remains unbeaten in the slalom. 
The Panthers travel to the University of New Hampshire next weekend for the EISA Championships, which begin on Friday.
