Lachlan Bishop earned his first victory of the season in the 400-meter run.
The Middlebury men's track and field team sent competitors to Massachusetts for the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational and the Tufts Stampede Open. The invite hosted by the Terriers featured professionals and athletes from all three NCAA divisions.
VALENTINE INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS (FRIDAY)
- Middlebury grabbed a pair of top-ten showings in the 400-meter dash. Xander Swann crossed the finish line in fourth with a personal-best clocking of 48.75 seconds. Emerson Kington also tallied a career-best time (48.80) to claim seventh.
- Kington also competed in the 200m, beating his previous best by .01 seconds for a time of 22.37 seconds. Sebastian Pantzer knocked nearly four-tenths off to clock a 22.43.
- Donnell Harvey Jr. secured a place in the championship heat of the 60 dash. The rookie crossed the line with a time of 7.03 seconds to grab ninth.
- The Panthers had five competitors compete in the 800. Will Lavey led the charge with a personal-best time of 1:53.95, while Cameron Miles shaved nearly two seconds off his season-best time (1:54.61). Also representing Middlebury in the event was Lachlan Bishop (1:56.26), Jack Ulrich (1:58.24) and Charlie Kessler (1:58.62).
- Drew Donahue, Ziggy Goddard and Zach Utz closed out the day for the Panthers by competing in the mile with all three clocking personal bests. Donahue shaved nearly five seconds off his time for last weekend's meet in Middlebury with a time of 4:10.92. Goddard (4:11.89) and Utz (4:12.64) knocked a combined nine seconds off their best time.
TUFTS STAMPEDE OPEN HIGHLIGHTS (SATURDAY)
- Sam McGarrahan continued his strong indoor campaign with two field event triumphs. In the long jump, McGarrahan recorded a mark of 6.77m on his third attempt to take gold.
- Shifting to the high jump, McGarrahan and Drew McStay each recorded marks of 1.90m to send the two into a jump-off. Both could not land a mark of 1.95m, calling for a shared title between the two Panthers.
- Middlebury tallied a one-two finish in the weight throw. Dave Filias secured the top spot with a throw of 16.54m, while Dan Urchuk was right behind with his third attempt of 15.72m for silver. Urchuk followed his runner-up finish in the weight throw with a 14.58m in the shot put to secure silver.
- Bishop took home top honors in the 400 with a time of 51.45 seconds.
- In the mile, Solomon McDow grabbed the runner-up spot, clocking in at 4:24.11.
- Donahue clocked a season-best 8:22.71 to earn silver in the 3,000.
- Henry Ericson earned a spot on the podium for the fifth-consecutive meet with a second-place effort in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.6m.
- Making his season debut in the 800, Benjamin Prestes claimed third with a time of 2:00.22.
The Panthers are idle until the Division III Indoor New England Championship begins on Friday, February 28 at The Track at New Balance in Boston, Massachusetts.
