Maddy Reid claimed runner-up honors in the 50 backstroke.
The 23rd-ranked Middlebury women's swimming and diving team competed on day two of the NESCAC Swimming and Diving Championship from Maine. Middlebury sits in fifth place with 425 points after 10 events. Williams (783) is followed closely by Tufts (748) for the top spot, while host Colby has 508 points to round out the top three.
HIGHLIGHTS
- In the 50-yard backstroke, Maddy Reid bettered her preliminary time by .08 seconds to claim the runner-up spot with a 26.20, just two-hundredths of a second behind Tufts' Elena Harrison.
- Shifting to the 50 freestyle, Anna McGrew represented the Panthers in the meet's fastest event. The rookie earned sixth in the championship final with a clocking of 23.70, just 0.13 off the NCAA 'B' cut time.
- Chloe Katz recorded a time of 4:57.04 to grab seventh place in the 500 free. The time was also an NCAA 'B' cut effort.
- Lauren Jolley was impressive on night two, clinching a spot in the 50 butterfly championship final. The rookie swam to a seventh-place outing with a time of 25.57.
- The Panthers had two representatives in the consolation final of the 50 breaststroke. Emma Hall shaved nearly 0.20 seconds off her preliminary time to secure 12th place (29.79), while Hannah Baumgartner earned 16th (30.62).
- Grace Brady and Baumgartner represented the Panthers in the 200 Individual Medley (IM) consolation final. Baumgartner led the charge with an 11th-place showing at 2:08.27 with Brady finishing less than a second behind (2:09.16) for 13th.
- Middlebury also secured some key points in the relay events. Starting in the 200 free, the quartet of Avery Maxwell, Baumgartner, Grace Nadecki, and Chloe Bautista touched the wall sixth with a combined time of 1:36.53.
- The Panthers closed the second day by tallying the second "B'cut relay time of the competition. Reid, Hall, Bautista and McGrew combined for a 3:49.38 to grab fifth in the 400 medley.
NOTES
- The runner-up showing is the first of Reid's career in the NESCAC Championship.
- Katz made the championship final in the 500 free for the third time in her career.
- Bowdoin's Natalie Garre set a meet record with her time of 4:47.63 in the 500 free.
- Sophia Verkleeren continued to shine with a meet record of 1:59.00 in the 200 IM.
The Panthers open day three of competition on Saturday, beginning with the preliminary rounds at 10:00 a.m. The finals for the events kick off at 5:45 p.m.
