Owen Currie snagged top-10 showings in two events at the MIT Winter Invite.
The Middlebury men's swimming and diving team closed the fall semester at the ultra-competitive Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Winter Invite, finishing fourth with 495.5 points. The 12th-ranked Engineers secured the team title with 1,661 points, followed by #16 Tufts (1,363 points) and Hamilton (818 points).
RELAY HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers secured two top-10 finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Cal Hale, Rodin McKenna, Andrew Dou and Prin Chantarangkul combined for the seventh-best time at 1:24.69. Finishing three spots behind was the B team of John Masiello, Mark Pearcy, Finnian Helman and Matthew Sonne (1:25.96).
- Dou, Masiello, McNamara and Chantarangkul earned ninth in the 200 medley by stopping the clock at 1:33.66.
- Middlebury's 400 free quartet of Hale, McKenna, Dou and Masiello shaved nearly three seconds off their seeded time with a 3:07.57 for ninth.Â
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
- Helman and McNamara paced the Panther output by competing in the A final of the 200 individual medley (IM). The rookie shaved over a second and a half off his preliminary time to secure fourth (1:54.96), while McNamara was two spots behind with a time of 1:55.43.
- Keith Hartman stopped the clock at 16:23.51 for fifth in the 1,650 freestyle. Owen Currie also earned a top-10 spot, finishing ninth (16:43.95).
- In the 100 breaststroke, Masiello claimed ninth with a time of 57:08. He also secured 10th in the 200, stopping the clock at 2:08.98.
- Currie made the A final in the 400 IM, touching the wall at 4:14.98 for 10th.
- Dou (51.41) and Hartman (4:47.54) closed out the top finishers by earning 10th in the 100 fly and 500 free, respectively.
The Panthers return to the pool for a weekend slate of action, battling Colby on Saturday, January 10 at 1:00 p.m. before hosting Bates on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
