The #12 Middlebury women's soccer team led wire-to-wire in Saturday's initial round of the NCAA Tournament, posting a 3-0 triumph over Westfield State on South Street Field. With the win, the Panthers secured a spot in Sunday's second-round tilt against the winner between #15 Rochester and Hartford.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Mari Rode logged the first Middlebury chance with 3:23 elapsed in the opening half, settling a pass from Emmy Christopher and firing a shot that sailed wide of the right post.
- The Owls tested the waters at the 8:08 mark. Avery Placzek gathered the ball on the edge of the penalty box before aiming for the upper-right 90, pushing her bid just outside the post.
- With 29:04 remaining in the session, Rode won a scrum for the ball and darted to the right side of the penalty box. She uncorked a strike into the top-left corner of the goal to establish a 1-0 advantage.
- The Panthers kept the pressure on in the 19th minute. Carolina Espinosa fired an attempt from 25 yards away to the lower portion of the goal, where Julia Robak waited to smother the bid.
- Stella Espinasse settled a loose ball and eyed the upper section of the goal with 20:54 expired, but her try crept just over the crossbar and out of play.
- Robak made another critical stop for Westfield State with 8:58 remaining in the half. Victoria Quagrello guided a shot from the left side that the Owl goalie stepped to her right to nab off the turf.
- The weekend hosts padded their lead with just 34 seconds left in the initial stanza. Taya McClennen flicked the ball into the box and Linnau settled the feed before Colby dashed in and tapped an attempt past Robak to lead 2-0 at the break.
- Colby eyed a second marker in the 52nd minute, carving a path into the box and firing a low-center look that Robak snapped down to cover.
- Morgan Berthiaume aimed to cut into the Middlebury lead at the 61:41 mark, stepping to the edge of the box and dialing up a shot that was blocked.
- Suzanna Fee pushed in the third tally, receiving a pass from Rode in the box and depositing the ball in the lower-middle area of the goal to make it a 3-0 contest.
- Robak denied an excellent Panther chance with 10:10 left in the bout. Mia Feldman raced down the right side and guided a try to the upper-right corner, but the goalie extended her left glove on a dive to quell the opportunity.
- The final scoring chance came in the 88th minute when Feldman charged into the box and fired to the upper-center, clanging her bid off the crossbar for the final 3-0 tally.
