Nathan Hernandez tallied wins in singles and doubles at the ITA New England Regional Championships this weekend.
Box Score The seventh-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team concluded its run on Saturday in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championships hosted by Tufts. The tandem of
Reif Larsen and
Nathan Hernandez and the duo of
Julian Wu and
Noah Lewis advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles bracket, while Larsen played his way to the quarterfinals of the singles event.
SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
- Lewis, Wu and Larsen each claimed their respective first matches in the round of 64.
- Wu and Larsen secured spots among the final 16 competitors with wins in the round of 32. Wu came from behind to defeat Babson's Maxim Zlobinsky (4-6, 7-5, 6-2), while Larsen outlasted Amherst's Aldiyar Abzhan in a three-set marathon (7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4).
- Wu bowed out to Garv Bahl of Tufts in the quarters by scores of 7-6 (2) and 6-1. Larsen slipped past Colby's Jason Daly with tallies of 7-6 (2), 4-6 and 6-2.
- Larsen fell to Amherst's Andreas Sillaste in straight sets to round out Middlebury's main draw action.
- Three Panthers competed in the B draw as individuals which featured eight-game pro sets and standard best two-of-three set scoring.
- Nathan Jackson defeated Saint Joseph's Ryan Boucher by an 8-2 score, while Hernandez earned an 8-0 sweep of Hartford's Anthony Pomares.
- Fourth-seeded Andrew Yim traversed the furthest into the bracket, earning a bye in the round of 64 before going the distance to beat Theo Sardain of Bates in the tiebreaker 8-7 (1).
- Jackson bowed out in the following round against Amherst's Albert Hu, while Hernandez exited in the same round against Babson's Sourish Gaghi.
- Yim dropped a three-set thriller to Amherst's Ronald Gualario during the round of 16.
DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
- After a bye, Wu and Lewis endured Babson's Ryan Patrick and Martin Mejia to advance by an 8-7 (4) tally. The Panthers fell to Bowdoin's Kiran Garapati and Simon Catanzaro in a hard-fought 8-6 match.
- The pair of Larsen and Hernandez received a bye in the initial round before prevailing over Bowdoin's Mark Kneiss and Luke Riezebeek by an 8-6 score. The tandem dropped its round of 16 match against Tufts' Alex Ganchev and Sacha Maes.
- Sidney Huet and Anand Sahasrabudhe picked up an 8-2 victory over Will Albrikes and Nikolas Bertarms of Nichols in their opening match before falling to Brandeis' Daniel Shemesh and Pierce Garbett.
- Hugh Hentschel and Yim got the better of Emerson's Filippo Nocchi and Connor Leung, 8-5, before coming up being edged 8-7 (1) against Amherst's Lukas Frangenberg and Albert Hu.

- Hentschel eclipsed the 50-win threshold in doubles play.
- Lewis earned his 30th singles triumph as a Panther.
Middlebury wraps up its fall slate at the two-day Skidmore Invitational next weekend.
