The 12th-ranked Middlebury women's soccer team used two first-half goals from Taya McClennen and held Southern Maine to zero shots on target over the final 45 minutes to earn a 2-1 victory on Sunday.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Panthers needed just 30 seconds to get on the scoreboard. Olivia Irwin-Pokorny found McClennen for a bid that found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Middlebury kept the pressure up with 4:09 elapsed. Mia Feldman worked the ball into the box and fired a bid, but Husky goalie Madi Cook made the stop.
  • Kadin Davoren looked to knot the contest on a shot in the 18th minute that sailed high.
  • McClennen added her second tally four minutes later off a feed from Carolina Espinosa, extending the Panther advantage to 2-0.
  • The hosts pushed the envelope immediately after the Middlebury goal. Davoren readied and blasted a shot on target that Panther goalie Frankie Marston stopped at the 22:59 mark.
  • Feldman tried her luck via a bid during the 25th minute that slid right of the goal.
  • Southern Maine cut the lead to 2-1 with 9:39 remaining in the opening half. Riley Reitchel tapped a quick pass to Lexi Morin, who pushed it over the goal line.
  • The Huskies looked for the equalizer out of the halftime break. Makyla Magid had a header at the 50:15 mark that whistled wide of the left post.
  • In the 60th minute, Lauren Tracey settled a ball and blasted a bid that went outside the right post.
  • Reitchel struck a bid 5:05 later, but her shot pushed wide of the net.
  • Middlebury nearly extended its lead in the 76th minute off the foot of Stella Espinasse. Morin came off her line and made the stop to keep it a one-goal contest.
  • Espinasse pressured the Huskies' defense with a shot that hit the post with 5:07 remaining.
  • Southern Maine had the final chance from Reitchel at the 86:27 mark, but her shot went wide left as the Panthers secured the 2-1 triumph.
