The tandem of Julian Wu and Noah Lewis won the A doubles title.
Box Score The seventh-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team finished its fall season in impressive fashion, claiming three titles at the Skidmore Open. The invitational featured Bowdoin, Denison, the Thoroughbreds, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Williams and the Panthers.
SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
- The "A" bracket featured Wu, who needed three sets to get past his first opponent by scores of 6-7 (2), 6-2 and 10-7. He cruised into the semifinal round with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over his next opponent. In the semifinals, Wu upset top-seeded Mark Kneiss of Bowdoin in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) and edged Swarthmore's Michael Melnikov (6-4, 5-7, 10-7) to claim the crown.
- Three Panthers competed in the "C" draw. Hugh Hentschel slipped past his opponent by 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 scores before falling in the quarterfinals to second-seeded Tom Suedmeyer of Denison in a three-set marathon (4-6, 7-6, 10-4). Nathan Jackson earned an opening-round triumph (5-7, 7-5, 10-2).
- The "D" bracket saw Justin Zhou earn two wins in straight sets. He cruised past Denison's Kyle Patrick (6-4, 6-3) and Carter Fayard of Williams (6-3, 6-3).Â
- Nathan Hernandez outlasted his foe for a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 triumph in his initial matchup before losing in the quarterfinals.Â
- Reif Larsen and Anand Sahasrabudhe both fell in their first matches as part of the "B" bracket, but both players secured three-set triumphs in their lone consolation matches.Â
DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
- The tandem of Wu and Noah Lewis posted identical 6-3 wins in the first two contests of the top draw. The Panther pair secured the title via a 6-1 score over Melnikov and Purushotham Koduri from Swarthmore.
- Zhou and Jackson recorded a pair of 6-3 decisions in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the "D" bracket. The Panther teammates cruised past Swarthmore's Fate MacAlasdair and Cameron Samek by a 6-1 score to claim the crown.
- In the "B' draw, the duo of Larsen and Hernandez posted a thrilling 7-5 victory against Bowdoin's Christian Stubbeman and Mick Tamas before falling in a tiebreaker in the semifinals.
NOTES
- Wu's four individual wins give him 69 for his career. The Panther also secured his 55th triumph in doubles.
- Jackson tallied his 10th, 11th and 12th doubles triumphs.
Middlebury is off until its spring season commences in March.
