Four School Records Fall as Panthers Compete in Middlebury Winter Classic

McGarrahan broke two school marks over the two-day meet.

The Middlebury men's track and field team saw four program records fall highlight efforts during its winter classic from Virtue Field House. The event featured no team scoring and welcomed Amherst, Bowdoin, Plattsburgh State, Saint Michael's, the University of Vermont, VTSU Johnson and VTSU Randolph.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Caleb Smith continued his strong start to the indoor season, breaking his school record with 4,952 points in the heptathlon. Smith's previous mark of 4,769 came at last season's Open New England Indoor Championships in Massachusetts.
  • Sam McGarrahan set a Middlebury record in the long jump, recording a winning distance of 6.81 meters. His result bested Caleb Fineske's 6.65m jump from the 2022 Tufts Cupid Challenge.
  • McGarrahan also broke the Panther high jump record, besting the previous mark by two-hundredths of a meter with a 1.98 to take first overall. Drew McStay finished in the runner-up spot with a jump of 1.90m.
  • The fourth school record to fall came in the 4x200m relay where Xander Swann, Marco Motroni, Emerson Kington and Hayden Bobowick posted a second-place clocking of 1:29.96. That time eclipses the effort of 1:30.02 set in 2012.
  • Middlebury's winning ways continued in the field events. Dan Urchuk took home the shot put title with a 14.91m throw and Henry Ericson earned top honors in the pole vault (4.45m). Sam Opawauyi followed up his record-breaking performance in the triple jump last weekend by securing the top spot again with a jump of 13.43m.
  • The Panthers excelled in the 800 with Charlie Kessler (2:01.61) and Jack Ulrich (2:01.62) separated by by the slimmest of margins for a top-two finish.
  • Middlebury grabbed second and third in the 60m dash. Donnell Harvey Jr. clocked a personal-best effort of 6.90 for silver while Motroni secured bronze with a time of 6.92.
  • Cameron Miles earned the first collegiate victory, taking the 1,000 in 2:31.00.
  • Other runner-up showings included Swann (22.22) in the 200m hurdles and Lachlan Bishop (1:23.58) in the 400m.
  • The Panthers closed the event with the relay quartet of Sebastian Pantzer, Nate Gardner, Joey Caspar and Isaiah Izzo Lizardi grabbed gold in the 4x400 by nearly three seconds with a time of 3:33.48.

NOTES

  • Urchuk set a new personal best with his shot put performance.
  • Ulrich put up a career-best time in the 800, while Swann clocked a collegiate-best run in the 200m hurdles.

The Panthers close out the month of January with a trip to Massachusetts when it serves as the host school for the Small College Invitational next Sunday from The Track at New Balance.
