Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#1 Middlebury Sees Unbeaten Streak End In OT At Connecticut College

The #1 Middlebury women's ice hockey team saw its unbeaten streak end as Connecticut College edged the Panthers 2-1 in overtime. The 11-0-0 start was the best start to a season for Middlebury since its record-breaking 27-0-0 national championship season two years ago.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked to get on the board during the 16th minute. Molly MacQueen had a quality chance that was thwarted by goalie Devon Galizio. Raia Schluter and Olivia McManus followed up with back-to-back point-blank rebound attempts, but Galizio held her own and turned both away.
  • The Camels nearly scored with just under two minutes remaining in the period. An initial bid by Elizabeth Bonner was denied by netminder Sophia Will before Lily Stern's one-timer skidded wide.
  • The teams skated four-on-four beginning at the 11:44 mark of the second period and Middlebury had a pair of good looks with just seconds left. Kate Flynn and Avery McInerny skated two-on-one, but McInerny's initial attempt from the doorstep and follow-up bid were stopped by Galizio.
  • The Panthers broke through with 14:18 expired. Kylie Quinlan dug the puck out of the left boards and slid a pass to Schluter in between the circles. Schluter wound up and rifled her shot under the crossbar for the 1-0 edge.
  • Connecticut College evened the game with 6:07 elapsed in the third stanza. Claire Sammons intercepted a clearing attempt at the blue line and barreled into the zone with a head full of steam, making Middlebury pay with a nifty goal to make it 1-1.
  • With nine seconds remaining in regulation following a Panther timeout, the Camels won the ensuing faceoff in their offensive zone. Kate Hagness' slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle was corralled by Will to push the game to overtime.
  • The game-winner came with 3:41 elapsed in the extra session. Caitlin Pierce's initial wraparound bid was denied by a sprawling-Will, but the Camel was able to sneak the rebound in for the 2-1 triumph.
NOTES
  • The teams played for the 56th time with Middlebury owning a 46-6-4 mark in the series.
The Panthers will be on home ice for eight of their next nine contests, beginning on Friday with a two-game series against third-ranked Amherst.
