The #5 Middlebury men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half, including two just 1:28 apart in the second stanza, cruising to a season-opening 4-0 triumph over Norwich.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers looked to get on the scoreboard 1:48 into the contest, but a right-footed shot by Tyler Payne was saved by Norwich goalie Nicolas Lanza diving to his left.
- Middlebury continued to apply pressure over the next 20 minutes with the best chance coming at 24:37. Luke Madden directed a header on net from the right side of the box, but Lanza punched the ball over the crossbar to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0.
- The Panthers scored two minutes later when Kyle Nilsson collected the ball 10 yards out, made a quick move to his left, and ripped a left-footed blast that tucked in just below the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.
- Nilsson increased the advantage (2-0) with 5:44 left before the halftime break. Quinn Pappendick crossed the ball toward the right post, where Nilsson was waiting and volleyed the ball into the lower-right corner.
- Out of the intermission, Madden pushed the Middlebury edge to 3-0 with 5:55 elapsed when he tapped a cross inside the left post.
- Payne made it a 4-0 contest 1:28 later on a penalty kick, blasting his attempt into the bottom-right corner.
- The Cadets produced a quality scoring chance in the 61st minute, but a shot from Diego Fuentes from 15 yards out was blocked by Shane Farrell to preserve the shutout.
- The hosts nearly made it a five-goal game with 9:17 remaining, but a diving save by Lanza on a knuckling bid from Anderson Gardner provided the final 4-0 score.
