On August 7, 2023, Middlebury kicked off a year-long celebration of the 50th year of Division III. While the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) membership voted to reorganize into three divisions on August 6, 1973, it wasn’t until the 1993-94 season that the NESCAC allowed its member institutions to participate in the NCAA postseason (excluding football). Over the course of the last 30 years, the Panthers have captured 45 team and 29 individual NCAA Division III titles, while also garnering a pair of AWCHA National Championships in women’s ice hockey. Middlebury also claimed 14 individual trophies prior to 1993-94, totaling 43 in its illustrious history.

During the last three decades, Middlebury has averaged over one team title per year and holds the Division III mark for most championships won by a team in a single year, with five during the 2003-04 academic year (women’s cross country, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s tennis and women’s lacrosse). Throughout this time, five separate programs have won three or more championships in a row (men’s ice hockey, men's lacrosse, women’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse and field hockey).

Middlebury concludes its year-long Division III celebration by reflecting on the NCAA Titles captured over the last three decades.

Following the NESCAC’s allowance for its institutions to compete in NCAA postseason play following the 1993-94 season, Middlebury’s first individual women’s Division III titles were posted by Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Heidi George ‘98, who claimed three-straight crowns in the pool from 1996 through 1998 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Fellow Hall of Famers Kristy Laramee Kerin ‘01 (high jump) and Marika Ross ‘08 (100 and 200-yard butterfly) have also touted multiple national titles for the Panthers. Additional women’s individual titles have been earned by Hall of Famer Dorcas Denhartog '87 (1985 cross country), teammates Helen Motter ‘96 (1993 singles/doubles) and Nancy Olson ‘93 (1993 doubles), Tessa Truex '05 (2005 1-meter diving), Lok Sze Leung (2013 tennis singles) and Alison Maxwell '15 (2015 indoor mile). Two Distance Medley Relay teams claimed national crowns during the indoor season. Sophia Spring '11, Juliet Ryan Davis '13, Kaitlynn Saldanha '11 and Margo Cramer '12 were victorious in 2011, while the 2012 quartet of Cramer, Rebecca Fanning '12, Ryan Davis and Addie Toulsey '13 crossed the finish line with a winning time a year later.

Since then, the program has been victorious nine more times to post a school-best 10 titles. Middlebury has claimed each of the last four championships in which it has competed and five of the last seven. Field hockey followed women’s lacrosse the ensuing fall, securing its first hardware in 1998 with a 3-2 overtime triumph over William Smith. The Panthers are currently owners of an NCAA-record six-straight championships and have won eight overall. Other women’s programs who have multiple NCAA Championships are ice hockey and cross country, both of which have hoisted the trophy on six occasions. Middlebury won three-straight ice hockey crowns (2004, 2005, 2006) and a pair of AWHCA titles. The Panthers earned a trio of titles in four seasons (2000, 2001, 2003) on the cross country trails.
