MacLean & Smith Compete At USA Track & Field Under-20 Championships

Caleb Smith and Audrey MacLean both competed at the USA Track & Field Under-20 Championships earlier this week.
Audrey MacLean and Caleb Smith of the Middlebury women's and men's track & field teams each represented the Panthers at the USA Track & Field Under-20 Championships held in Eugene, Oregon earlier this week. MacLean took part in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Smith participated in the decathlon in fields that featured athletes from multiple collegiate divisions.
  • MACLEAN HIGHLIGHTS
    • MacLean earned a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, stopping the clock in 10:36.95.
    • The Panther has broken the 10:40 barrier in four-consecutive steeplechase races this spring. 
    • This race marks the conclusion of her sensational rookie campaign during which she captured All-American, all-region and All-NESCAC honors in both track & field and cross country.
    • MacLean was also tabbed the NESCAC Rookie of the Year in both track & field and cross country, while securing conference titles in the steeplechase and the 5,000 during the league championship.
  • SMITH HIGHLIGHTS
    • In the decathlon, Smith placed sixth at the Under-20 Championships with a personal-best total of 6,794 points, topping his collegiate high of 6,633.
    • The Panther finished in the top-five spots in six events, highlighted by a fourth-place showing in the 100 with a time of 11.26 seconds. He also recorded personal bests in the shot put (13.33m), discus (42.83m) and pole vault (4.30m).
    • Earlier this season, Smith earned All-American honors in the event, finishing 11th at the national championship.
    • The rookie's record-breaking campaign led to All-NESCAC and all-region accolades, as well as the program mark in the heptathlon, throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. 
The top-two finishers in each event at this championship will qualify for the U20 World Track and Field Championships if they've met the world championship standard mark. The championships will be held in Lima, Peru, on August 24-27.
