Middlebury Finishes Sixth In LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup Standings

Middlebury College finished in sixth place among 323 Division III institutions in the 2023-24 LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Final Standings amassing 946.50 points throughout the year. This marks the 19th-straight year that the Panthers have finished in the top-10 places. Johns Hopkins won its second-straight cup with 1,090.50 points. NESCAC foe Williams placed second (1,026.08 points) while Emory rounded out the top-three spots (1,009 points).

Middlebury earned 200 of its points from a pair of NCAA Championships. Field hockey opened the campaign with an unblemished 22-0 record and won its record-setting sixth-straight national title and eighth overall. The women's lacrosse team concluded the year with an undefeated 23-0 mark this season, collecting its fourth-consecutive NCAA crown and the 10th in the program's history.

In the fall, four teams reached the NCAA Tournament to go along with the field hockey squad. Men's soccer made its 16th appearance in the national tournament, reaching the quarterfinal round before dropping a tightly-contested 1-0 result to Amherst. The Panthers concluded the season with a 15-2-4 record, marking the seventh time in the last eight years that the team has won 10 or more games. The volleyball team returned to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time, defeating Manhattanville 3-0 in the NCAA Tournament opening round before falling to Johns Hopkins in the second round. The men's cross country team finished 19th at the NCAA Championship to garner 55 points, while the women's cross country squad secured a 21st place showing and earned 53 points. 
 
The winter saw three teams compete in the NCAA Tournament, accumulating 191 points. The women's hockey team won its NCAA First Round and Quarterfinal contests, defeating Western New England and Plattsburgh State before bowing out against Elmira in the semifinals. The alpine and nordic ski teams also earned 60 points with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, marking the fifth-consecutive season with a 10th place or higher finish at the national event. Women's Swimming and Diving grabbed 48 points, as Chloe Katz represented Middlebury on the national stage by earning All-American honors in both the 500 and 1,650-meter freestyle events. 
 
The Panthers finished the year strong, tallying 424.50 points in NCAA competition during the spring, which was second-most among all Division III institutions. In addition to women's lacrosse, baseball, men's and women's outdoor track and field, men's and women's tennis and men's lacrosse each competed on the national stage. The baseball team recorded the most wins in program history (32) and reached the regional final before dropping a 6-4 decision to national champion Misericordia to register 50 points. The men's tennis team secured a place in the NCAA Semifinals, while the women's tennis squad advanced to the national quarterfinal. Both teams combined for 156 points in the standings. The women's track and field team earned 45.5 points by finishing tied for 27th at the NCAA Championships. Highlighting the event were Macy Daggitt and Audrey MacLean who were both tabbed to the All-American First Team. Daggitt placed fourth in the long jump, while MacLean crossed the finish line in sixth during the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The men's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinal round for the second-consecutive year, defeating SUNY Geneseo and knocking off Dickinson to earn 73 points.
