Zink’s Banner Day Propels #16 Men’s Lacrosse Over #13 Bowdoin 17-9 In NESCAC Semifinals

Will Zink of the #16/fourth-seeded Middlebury men's lacrosse team scored a career-high eight goals during this afternoon's NESCAC Semifinal contest, as the Panthers rushed past #13/third-seeded Bowdoin 17-9.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Polar Bears opened the scoring after 2:16 as Jason Lach found the back of the net.
  • Middlebury evened the score 3:35 later, as Zink grabbed his first tally of the day.
  • Bowdoin regained the lead with 7:15 remaining on a marker by Kevin Sandor, but Zink tallied his second marker just 1:05 later to keep the score even (2-2).
  • The Panthers closed the opening frame with two unanswered goals. Patrick Jamin gave Middlebury the lead with 3:35 to go as he fired a bid into the top right corner. Zink completed his hat trick just over a minute later, scooping up a loose ball right in front of the crease and flicking his shot past Polar Bear goalie Robert Hobbs for the 4-2 edge.
  • Bowdoin cut the deficit to one (4-3) after just 24 seconds into the quarter on a player-up marker, but Jamin restored the two-goal edge (5-3) with 11:02 showing on the clock, spinning past his defender and depositing the ball into the bottom right corner.
  • The Panthers kept their foot on the gas, as Zink recorded back-to-back tallies in less than 60 seconds of action to pull ahead 7-3.
  • With 6:38 to go in the half, Middlebury extended its lead five (8-3) as Jake Peluso rifled a shot into the bottom right corner as he was knocked to the turf. Tom Conley added a ninth marker with 2:35 to go as the Panthers stormed ahead by a score of 9-3.
  • The Polar Bears tallied a pair of goals sandwiched around the halftime break, cutting the deficit to just two (9-7) with 7:18 to go in the third.
  • Zink pushed the lead back to three (10-7) with 5:22 remaining as he scooped up a groundball right in front of goal and bounced a shot past Hobbs. 
  • The Panthers continued to increase their advantage as Billy Curtis, Zink and Will Ford each found nylon over the next 3:22 to bring the score to 13-7. 
  • With 1:10 left in the quarter, Casey Ryan fired a shot past Middlebury netminder Hayden Kern to pull the Polar Bears within five (13-8).
  • The Panthers recorded four unanswered goals to kick off the final frame, taking a decisive 17-8 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.
  • Matt Ward found the back of the net for Bowdoin with 27 seconds to go, but it was not enough as Middlebury secured the 17-9 upset victory.
NOTES
  • Zink's eight goals during the victory tied a program single-game record.
  • Kern denied 12 attempts in between the pipes for the Panthers, marking the 11th contest the Panther has stopped double-digit shots this season
  • Middlebury and Bowdoin met for the 55th time with the Panthers holding a 36-19 advantage in the series. The programs faced off for just the fourth time in NESCAC Tournament history.
  • The Panthers return to the conference title game for the 12th time and are seeking their eighth title. 
Middlebury takes on #10/second-seeded Wesleyan at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday for a chance to claim the conference crown.
