Raman Wins 60th Career Match In NCAA First Round, Bows Out In Round Of 16

Sahana Raman of the Middlebury women's tennis team tallied her 60th career singles win, a straight-set victory during her opening-round match at the NCAA Singles Championship. Raman bowed out following a back-and-forth setback in the round of 16 against the top seed to conclude her season.
 
FIRST-ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
  • During first-round action against Christopher Newport's Tessa Trate, the players split the opening two games. Raman rattled off four-straight triumphs to take a 5-1 lead. Trate broke Raman's serve in the seventh game before the Panther claimed the set with a service break of her own for a 6-2 victory. 
  • In the second frame, Raman jumped out to a 5-0 advantage. Trate held serve in the sixth game before Raman surrendered just one point in the seventh to seal a 6-2, 6-1 victory and advance to the round of 16. 
SECOND-ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the afternoon, Raman squared off with top-seeded Rena Lin of the University of Chicago. The Panther held serve without surrendering a point in the opening set, but Lin rattled off the next five games for a 5-1 edge.
  • Raman claimed the seventh and eighth games to slice the deficit to 5-3, but Lin broke the Panther's serve for the 6-3 opening-set triumph.
  • The pair traded the first six games of the second stanza. Raman tallied wins in the seventh and eighth frames, while Lin posted triumphs in the final four games to earn the 6-3, 7-5 victory.
NOTES
  • Raman's matches against Trate and Lin were the first meetings this season. 
  • The opening-round victory was Raman's 60th individual win of her career, owning an impressive 60-25 record and a 29-7 tournament mark.
  • The Panther participated in the NCAA Singles Tournament for the second-consecutive season, advancing to the quarterfinal round a year ago.
Raman concludes the season tied for second on the team with 15 victories.
