Smith earned All-American Second Team honors.
Caleb Smith of the Middlebury men's track and field team finished in 11th place with 6,599 points in the decathlon at the NCAA Championship. The Panther moved up one spot from the first day to garner All-American Second-Team honors.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Smith started out strong in the opening event on Thursday. The Panther clocked in at a blistering 11.12 seconds in the 100-meter dash, placing sixth overall with a personal-best time.
- The rookie also finished in the top-10 spots in the shot put with a personal-record launch of 11.67 meters, which was good for 10th.
- The other events on the first day were the high jump (17th - 1.82m) the 400 (17th - 52.30 seconds) and the long jump (19th - 6.34m).
- Smith had a phenomenal second day of competition, opening up with a personal-best time of 15.71 seconds in the 110 hurdles to finish in 13th.
- In the discus, the Panther chucked the implement a whopping 37.32m to claim runner-up honors. The distance was just over two meters further than his best throw to date.
- Smith carried that momentum into the pole vault, clearing the bar at 4.10m to finish in a four-way tie for seventh place.
- In the javelin, the Panther finished in fifth with a mark of 52.51m.
- In the final event of the decathlon (1,500), Smith set a personal-record time of 5:07.97 to finish in 20th. He shaved nearly three seconds off his previous season-best clocking.
NOTES
- Smith made his debut at the NCAA Championship event and was the second Panther in as many years to compete in the decathlon.
Dave Filias is the final competitor for the men's track and field team at the NCAA Championship. The Panther will compete in the hammer throw on Saturday at 3:45 p.m.
