Lucas Flemming blasted a home run over the right-center field wall in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading Middlebury to a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over #25 Colby on Saturday and booking the Panthers a spot in the NESCAC Championship.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mules loaded the bases in the top of the third. Ethan Hillenberg ripped a double to left, Marcus Forrester walked and Ryan Grace was hit by a pitch. Brady O'Brien lifted a sacrifice fly to center which plated Hillenberg, while Forrester touched home on a fielder's choice for a 2-0 lead.
- Middlebury tied the contest with a pair of tallies in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles from Andrew Ashley and Nathan Samii to drive in Mitchell Schroeder who reached on a fielder's choice and Baker Angstman who singled.
- Colby answered with three scores in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by Genki LeClair and a base knock to left by Clint Flippo, for a 5-2 advantage.
- The Panthers pulled to within two (5-3) in the fifth as Beau Root laced a one-out single to right and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle McCausland.
- Middlebury continued its comeback in the seventh. Flemming singled and Root reached on a fielding miscue to put runners on second and third. Chris Borter followed with a double off the wall in right center to bring the pair across the plate and tie the score at 5-5.
- The Mules threatened in their half of the ninth when Noah Reichman doubled to center with two outs, but Panther reliever Andrew Gatland induced a pop-up to keep the contest deadlocked.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Flemming took the first pitch he saw and launched it over the fence in right center for the walkoff 6-5 triumph.
