Men’s Track and Field Competes At Amherst Spring Fling

Colin Breen finished third in the 400m with a personal-best time of 49.68.
The Middlebury men's track and field team earned two event victories to highlight their efforts during the Amherst Spring Fling on Sunday afternoon.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Xander Swann was the champion of the 400-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 54.95, which ranks 31st in Division III this year. Parker Loupessis placed third in the event, stopping the clock in 56.88.
  • Dave Filias claimed the crown in the hammer throw, launching the implement 56.64m, which was nearly two meters further than the runner up. Dan Urchuk (47.46m) and James Hetherington (47.06m) rounded out the top10, finishing ninth and 10th, respectively.
  • Filias also tallied a third-place effort in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 14.77m. Logan Cosgrove was three spots behind his teammate, earning sixth place (13.97m).
  • Recording a third-place finish in the 400m was Colin Breen. The senior stopped the clock in 49.68, which was a personal best clocking.
  • In the long jump, Jed Nelson lept 6.56m to secure the bronze. The distance was a personal record.
  • Four Panthers landed in the top 10 in the discus. Leading the way was Urchuk with a toss of 42.96m. Samuel Maxwell was sixth with a distance of 42.13m, while Cosgrove (41.70m) and Filias (40.59m) finished eighth and 10th, respectively.
  • Aiden Tam raced to a fifth-place showing in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.18, his quickest clocking in the event. Jefferson Hill crossed the finish line in 15.29 to earn seventh place.
  • A pair of Panthers finished in the top 10 in the triple jump. Sam Opawuyi finished sixth with a personal-best jump of 13.23m. Tony Wang was one spot behind him with a leap of 12.46m. 
  • Benjamin Martin placed sixth in the javelin, recording a distance of 45.35m. In the pole vault, Caleb Smith cleared the bar at 4.00m to claim eighth place. 
NOTES
  • In total, 11 athletes recorded personal bests during the meet.
Middlebury is back in action next Friday when it travels to Northampton, Massachusetts for the Carla Coffey Invitational hosted by Smith.
