The 18th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team fell 10-9 to Williams in three overtimes on Wednesday. The contest was the regular-season finale for both teams and was a contest for the Thomsen Trophy.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The game remained scoreless until the final minute of the first quarter. Will Zink ripped a sensational behind-the-back shot into the left side of the goal with 30 seconds remaining. Middlebury stopped an Eph clearing attempt late in the stanza, as Russell Thorndike scooped up a groundball and fired a bid into the back of the net with 5.3 seconds left for a 2-0 advantage.
- Williams cut the deficit to one (2-1) with 3:33 elapsed in the second frame. Will Doran bounced a shot that snuck past sprawling Panther goalie Hayden Kern.
- The Panthers responded 49 seconds later when Tom Conley found the back of the net following a nifty pass by Patrick Jamin.
- The Ephs answered with a tally at 7:58 when Cavin Caputo scored into the upper corner to bring the visitors to within 3-2.
- Middlebury came out of the halftime break and won the initial faceoff. The Panthers cycled the ball around before Thorndike rifled a shot that bounced into the back of the net just 43 seconds into the third quarter for a 4-2 edge.
- Williams rattled off the next four goals, capped by a dodge and score from Finlay Macknight with 3:40 showing on the clock, for a 6-4 advantage.
- The hosts answered with the game's next three goals, including the first career goal by Will Crispino, for a 7-6 lead with 5:14 left in regulation.
- The Ephs posted three of the next five tallies, knotting the game at 9-9 with 38.7 seconds left when Nick Bates scored from the right side.
- The game remained tied at 9-9 through the first two overtime periods, highlighted by a trio of point-blank saves in the first overtime, to send it to a third extra session.
- Williams scored the game-winning goal with 2:01 left, as Caputo went behind the back in transition for the final 10-9 score.
NOTES
- William Munroe moved into fifth place in the program's record books with 541 faceoff wins. He also picked up his third assist this season.
- Thorndike recorded a hat trick as he eclipsed the 100-goal mark for his career (101G, 43A).
- Jamin surpassed the 100-career point total in the game with 101 (37G, 64A).
- Billy Curtis finished with a team-best four points (1G, 3A).
- Kern collected 16 saves in the contest, marking the 20th time in his career that he has recorded double-digit stops.
- Teddy Curran had two caused turnovers, moving him into a tie for fifth in the single-season laurels with 24.
- The programs played for the 73rd time with Middlebury holding a 45-28 advantage in the all-time series.
- The Thomsen Trophy was started in 1984 by Middlebury Hall of Famer Jeff Thomsen '83 and his brother Peter who captained and played for Williams.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they play in a NESCAC Quarterfinal contest. The game time and the opponent will be announced by the conference office on Wednesday night.
