Middlebury To Break Ground On New Outdoor Tennis Facility, Throwing Areas This Summer

Tennis will be located in the grass area above the track, while throwing will be to the right of track and above South Street Field.
Middlebury College will break ground on a new outdoor tennis facility, along with enhanced throwing areas for the track and field teams this summer. The new facility will feature three additional courts for a total of 12, as well as enhanced throwing areas for shot put, javelin, discus, and hammer throw.

The Proctor Tennis Courts are being relocated as part of Middlebury's plans to expand its outdoor tennis facilities, according to the 2008 campus master plan. The move will also make way for a new student center, which Middlebury envisions to be a vibrant, active living room for the campus, where every student, faculty, and staff member feels a sense of belonging.

The tennis facility will move to the Athletics complex off South Street near the men's soccer field and the Allan Dragone Track and Field Complex. The throwing area for the track and field teams also will be relocated and upgraded to the grass area above South Street Field.

Director of Athletics Erin Quinn '86 said the move is an opportunity to enhance the playing experience for student-athletes on the men's and women's tennis teams.

"While we have enjoyed the central location of the courts, this move will allow matches and practices to take place in closer proximity to our other athletics facilities. With three additional tennis courts, matches and practices will become more efficient for our teams and will provide more opportunities for those participating in recreational tennis as well."

Regarding improvements for the men's and women's track and field teams, Quinn said, "The throwing areas have been in need of critical upgrades, and I am excited that this project allows us to make those improvements for our student-athletes."

The throwing areas will be constructed first, followed by the tennis facility, with an expected completion date of September.
