Men’s Track & Field Finishes As Runner-Up At Carla Coffey Invitational

Samuel Maxwell finished in the top-10 in two events.
The Middlebury men's track and field won five events and concluded the Carla Coffey Invitational in second place, totaling 162 points. Tufts won the meet with 195 points, while Bowdoin rounded out the top-three with 115 points.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the 1,500-meter, Shef West crossed the line first with a winning time of 3:56.65. Zach Utz finished fourth, stopping the clock in 3:59.08.
  • Sam McGarrahan was crowned the champion in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.97 meters, which was a personal-best. Drew Mcstay rounded out the top-three (1.92m), while Tristan Joseph secured a fifth-place finish (1.87m).
  • Claiming the hammer throw for the third-straight time this season was Dave Filias. The Panther won the event with a toss of 54.95m, which was over two meters further than the runner-up. Samuel Maxwell (44.75m) and James Hetherington (43.19m) also claimed a spot in the top ten, finishing seventh and ninth, respectively.
  • Caleb Smith won his first collegiate decathlon, totaling 6,335 points. The first-year was victorious in five events, while finishing as the runner-up in three. 
  • Alec Gironda topped the podium in the 5,000 with a time of 14:53.92, edging the second place finisher by less than a second.
  • A pair of Panthers placed in the top-five in the 400 hurdles. Xander Swann crossed the finish line in second, stopping the clock in 54.65 seconds, while Parker Loupessis was fourth (55.60).
  • In the pole vault, Joel Kofman finished as the runner-up, clearing the bar at 4.40m. Henry Ericson was just three places behind in fifth (4.25m).
  • Jed Nelson was second in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 6.70m. McGarrahan also earned a spot in the top-10, placing eighth (6.52m).
  • Logan Cosgrove led the way for Middlebury in the shot put, placing second with a personal record toss of 14.05m.
  • In the discus, Maxwell earned runner-up honors, launching the implement 41.95m. Dan Urchuk (40.00m) and Cosgrove (39.43m) also scored points for the Panthers, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively.
  • The quartet of Marco Motroni, Aiden Tam, Swann and Aidan Castanon placed third in the 4x100 relay with a clocking of 42.97 seconds.
  • In the 400, Colin Breen continued his strong spring, stopping the clock in 49.36 for third place. Ryan Thompson rounded out the scorers, finishing eighth with a time of 52.22.
  • Gabe Watson was third in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:55.35), while Ryan Devine (10:05.44) ran to sixth. 
  • The group of Breen, Thompson, Swann and Lachlan Bishop placed fourth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:26.10.
  • Two Panthers secured points in the triple jump. Sam Opawuyi finished sixth with a leap of 13.00m, while Oliver Urena was just behind him with a personal-best distance of 12.36m.
  • Motroni (11.03) and Richard Clark (11.07) each competed in the 100 dash, placing sixth and seventh, while Loupessis was eighth in the 110 hurdles (16.00).
NOTES
  • Filias' triumph in the hammer throw was his third of the outdoor season.
  • In total, 18 Panthers set personal bests at the meet, with multiple athletes setting personal records in more than one event.
Middlebury returns home next Saturday to host the Middlebury Invitational.
