The Middlebury baseball team scored six runs in the first three innings, easing past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 13-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Forbes Field. During the win,
Beau Root became the program's career leader in triples with 12.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers got on the board with a pair of runs in their initial at-bat. Root reached on an infield single and came all the way around to score on a double by Andrew Ashley that one-hopped the wall in right field. Ashley moved to third on a failed pickoff and touched home when Mitchell Schroeder bounced a seeing-eye single through the left side for the 2-0 lead.
- Middlebury pushed its advantage to 6-0 with four tallies in the third. Zip Malley lifted a double down the right-field line to plate Nathan Samii and Kyle McCausland who both drew walks. Aidan Han followed with a two-run triple to left center that scored Malley and Sammy Smith who induced a base on balls.
- The Engineers responded with a trio of runs in the top of the sixth. Joey Saia ripped a two-run double to left center, followed by a run-scoring two-bagger in the right-center field gap by Julian Scarpa to make it a 6-3 score.
- The Panthers answered with three tallies in the home half of the frame. Root roped his record-breaking triple to right and raced home on a sacrifice fly from Ashley. Schroeder continued his torrid stretch with a three-base hit off the bottom of the right-field wall and crossed the plate when McCausland launched a homer over the trees in left center for a 9-3 edge.
- Middlebury tacked on four in the eighth on an RBI double to left by McCausland and an opposite-field single by Samii for an 11-3 lead. A few batters later, Smith pushed Samii home on a towering two-run roundtripper to left for the final 13-3 score.
NOTES
- Schroeder continued his hot hitting streak on Wednesday, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a run batted in and also scored a run. Over the last five games, the Panther is 10-for-15 with four homers, a double, a triple, 17 RBI and five walks. He has raised his batting average by 58 points.
- McCausland went 2-for-4, scored three times and drove in three during the triumph. He has 107 RBI for his career, moving him into third place in program history.
- Zander Gilmartin picked up the win in relief, striking out two of the three batters he faced for his first victory this season.
- Middlebury picked up its seventh-straight triumph and fifth-consecutive win at Forbes Field.
- The programs played for the second time this spring and the 61st overall in a series that started in 1907 with the Panthers holding a 34-27 edge. Middlebury has won the last nine meetings.
The Panthers continue their long homestand when they return to NESCAC West action on Friday hosting Williams for the first contest of a three-game weekend series.
