#7 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Halts #3 Middlebury 4-3 In Tightly-Contested Battle

The third-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team fell 4-3 in a tightly-contested match against seventh-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) to conclude its spring break trip. The team used seven-point scoring during the contest, with the best-of-three doubles results counting for one point, and the match finishing with the clinching point.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 edge, claiming all three doubles matches. The tandems of Noah Laber and Aidan Harris and Robby Ward and Neel Epstein each tallied 6-4 triumphs at #2 and #1, respectively.
  • In the third slot, Julian Wu and Noah Lewis battled past their opponents in a hard-fought tiebreaker 7-6 (7).
  • In singles action, the Stags evened the score at 1-1 with a straight-set victory at #1 (6-4, 6-1), but Epstein restored Middlebury's advantage, easing to a 6-1, 6-4 win in the fifth slot to make it 2-1.
  • CMS knotted the contest at 2-2 with a triumph at #6, before moving into the lead with a tight victory at #4. Harris won the first set 6-1, but was unable to hold off Anirudh Gupta who claimed 6-3, 6-3 wins, giving the hosts a 3-2 edge.
  • The Stags clinched the match in the third slot. Ward battled past Matthew Robinson 7-5 in the opening set, but fell 6-3, 6-1 in the following two to give CMS the 4-2 victory.
NOTES
  • Wu secured a hard-fought, back-and-forth 7-6 (7), 5-7, 6-3 win in the second spot after the match had already been clinched to make the final score 4-3.
  • Epstein earned his 10th win of the season in both singles and doubles play in tonight's match and extended his singles winning streak to seven-straight.
  • Lewis, Nathan Jackson and Thehan Wijemanne each tallied exhibition victories .
  • The programs met for the 19th time in the series.
The Panthers return home on Saturday, March 30 to host Williams in NESCAC action.
