Smith’s School Record Highlights Efforts As Men’s Track And Field Competes At Two Meets

Caleb Smith rewrote his own school record in the heptathlon and Marco Motroni tied his 60-meter dash record, highlighting results for the Middlebury men's track and field team this weekend. Smith represented the Panthers in the Open New England Championships on The TRACK at New Balance, while Motroni and others competed in the Tufts' National Qualifying Meet.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Smith tallied 4,769 points over the two days of action in the heptathlon, smashing the previous record of 4,599 points which he set last week. The Panther edged Dylan Torok (4,700 points) of Division II Southern Connecticut State to claim the title. Smith won the 60 dash (7.18) and finished second in both the high jump (1.87m) and the long jump (6.63m). His point total (4,769) ranks 30th in Division III.
  • At Tufts, Motroni tied his school record that he established a week ago with a clocking of 6.90 in both the preliminary and the final to claim the victory. His time ranks 42nd nationally.
  • Aiden Tam finished in fourth place during the 60 hurdles, crossing the line in the final with a time of 8.31 seconds. Teammate Jefferson Hill was right behind in fifth (8.47). 
  • The Distance Medley Relay (DMR) quartet of Owen Johnson, Xander Swann, Lachlan Bishop and Zach Utz posted a season-best effort of 10:12.08. The converted time of 10:03.88 on a banked track sits 39th in Division III. 
  • Joel Kofman and Henry Ericson each cleared the bar in the pole vault (4.33m), Sam Opawuyi hit the sand in the triple jump (12.77m), Drew Mcstay competed in the high jump (1.87m), while Dave Filias (17.38m) and Samuel Maxwell (15.51m) took part in the weight throw. 
Selections for the NCAA Indoor Championship will be announced on ncaa.com on Sunday, March 3 in the evening. This year's championships will take place March 8-9 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
