Hughes’ Runner-Up Performance Highlights Final Day of NESCAC Championships

Samuel Hughes claimed All-NESCAC honors with a runner-up showing in the 200-yard backstroke.
Samuel Hughes highlighted the NESCAC Championships by securing a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke on Sunday night. Winning the meet was 11th-ranked Williams with 1,584.5 points, while #4 Tufts finished second with 1,412.5 points and #17 Amherst rounded out the top three with 827.5 points. Middlebury concluded the event with 769.5 points to finish seventh.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Hughes swam to a runner-up finish in the 200 back with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:47.79. 
  • During the same event, Jack Undercofler secured 12th place, clocking in at 1:51.47. 
  • In the 1,650 freestyle, Rodin McKenna claimed a top-10 finish, placing ninth (16:12.15). Pierce Bigelow was next for the Panthers, earning 15th (16:21.80), while Andrew Planting was one spot back in 16th (16:25.90).
  • Luke McNamara was second in the consolation final of the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:51.44.
  • In the 200 breaststroke, Paul Shen placed 14th, stopping the clock in 2:04.29.
  • The quartet of Hughes, Jason Chiappinelli, McKenna and Matthew Hensel closed the meet with a ninth-place showing in the 400 free relay. The group finished the race with a time of 3:05.00.
NOTES
  • On the final day of competition, 18 Panthers earned their top times of the season.
  • At the conclusion of today's events, Middlebury diving coach Bradley Schott was named the NESCAC Diving Co-Coach of the Year.
The Panthers await their fate in the NCAA Championship when the field is announced on Wednesday, February 28.
