Men’s Ice Hockey Travels to Bowdoin For NESCAC Quarterfinals Clash

The Panthers travel to Maine to face Bowdoin in NESCAC Quarterfinal action.
The Middlebury men's ice hockey team has earned the seventh seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will travel on Saturday to face off with second-seeded Bowdoin in NESCAC Quarterfinal action. Puck drop in Maine is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
 
ABOUT MIDDLEBURY
  • The Panthers are making their 21st appearance in the NESCAC Tournament and have missed just three tournaments since its inception in 2000.
  • Middlebury boasts a 31-12 overall record in the conference tournament, which is the second-most victories trailing only Trinity's 32 (32-16). 
  • The Panthers are looking to secure their league-leading ninth conference crown, with the program's last NESCAC Title coming in 2010. 
  • Middlebury has reached the semifinal round on 14 occasions, most recently during the 2016 campaign. 
PANTHERS TO WATCH
  • Jin Lee has spearheaded the Panther offense this season, leading the squad in goals (nine), assists (nine) and points (18), while making an appearance in all 24 games. The junior has recorded at least one point in 14 contests, including a goal and two assists in a 7-5 triumph over Williams on February 10.
  • Also contributing in the offensive zone is Andrej Hromic. He has tallied 15 points this year, finding the back of the net eight times, while adding seven assists. Hromic has been on fire as of late, registering a point in five of his last seven games. 
  • Jackson Morehouse has had a strong first-year campaign, sitting third on the team in points with 12 (5G, 7A), while skating in 22 games. The forward recently netted a hat trick against Williams and provided the game-winning goal in a 5-2 triumph over Wesleyan earlier this season. Forward Wyatt Pastor has also tallied double-digit points with 11 (3G, 8A) and leads the Panthers with two game-winners this year.
  • Defensively, John Burdett has blocked a team-best 31 shots this winter and owns a plus/minus of +11 which leads the squad. Burdett has appeared in all but one contest and has tallied five points, including four assists. Nolan Moore has also recorded seven points, scoring two goals and adding five helpers, while blocking 28 attempts.
  • In between the pipes, Jake Horoho has played 19 games, starting 16 of those. The goaltender boasts a .915 save percentage and has stopped 483 shots this season, which is fifth in the conference and was named NESCAC Player of the Week earlier this year.
ABOUT BOWDOIN
  • The Polar Bears own a 14-6-4 overall record and a 10-4-4 mark in conference play this season.
  • Bowdoin has also reached the NESCAC Tournament on 21 occasions and owns a 23-17 record in conference tournament play.
  • The Polar Bears are attempting to claim their fifth conference crown and second straight after winning the NESCAC Tournament a season ago as the seventh seed.
  • This year, Bowdoin tops the conference in faceoff percentage (.536), short-handed goals (four) and owns the second-lowest goals against average (GAA - 2.01). 
POLAR BEARS TO WATCH
  • The duo of Luke Wheeler and Bryce Bollman lead the Polar Bear output. Wheeler has contributed a team-high 16 points and eight assists, while also tallying eight goals. Bollman has netted 10 tallies which leads the squad and is fifth in the league, while also setting up five markers.
  • Jesse Lycan is third on the team in points with 12, scoring six goals and recording six assists. In the final game of the regular season, Lycan tallied two scores in a 4-1 victory over Connecticut College.
  • Nate Clark has blocked 26 shots for the Bowdoin defense and contributed six points on six assists. First-year Matt Killoran is just behind him, smothering 23 attempts while setting up four goals. 
  • Alex Kozic has been a stalwart in goal for the Polar Bears. The netminder has played nearly 1,300 minutes this season, winning 12 games with a .934 save percentage. The senior has made 605 stops this winter and boasts a GAA of 1.99.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Middlebury and Bowdoin meet for the 96th time, with the Polar Bears holding a slight 43-41-11 edge in a series that dates back to 1948.
  • The two programs faced off twice earlier this season. In the first meeting, Bowdoin earned a hard-fought 4-3 overtime victory, while the teams skated to a 2-2 tie in the rematch.
  • The teams have played seven times in the NESCAC Tournament with the Panthers winning five of those contests.
  • This is just the second meeting between the squads in the NESCAC Quarterfinals. The Polar Bears claimed the previous matchup 6-3 during the 2013-14 season.
