#19 Women’s Swimming & Diving Finishes Third While Hosting NESCAC Championships

The Panthers celebrate their third-place finish on Sunday.
Chloe Katz tallied her second All-NESCAC performance of the weekend, as the 19th-ranked Middlebury women's swimming and diving team placed third with 1,020 points. The third-place finish for the Panthers is their best since the 2014-15 season. Fourth-ranked Williams won its 20th league crown with 2,002 points, while #9 Tufts finished in second place with 1,628.5 points.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Katz kicked off the night's competition with a podium finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The junior placed third and garnered 27 points with a personal-best and NCAA 'B' cut time of 16:59.41.
  • Also competing in the event was Molly Nordquist who touched the wall in 13th place for 14 points (17:52.98), while Mia Zottola was just seconds behind in 14th (17:55.66) to earn 13 points.
  • A few events later, Fayanne Smith-Salzberg swam to sixth place during the 200 breaststroke (2:19.96), while Emma Hall was eighth (2:20.64). Both clockings are NCAA 'B' cut times.
  • Miranda Moser broke the top-10 with a seventh-place effort in the 200 butterfly (2:06.61), while Chloe Bautista swam to 10th place (2:06.26) and Evelyn Buetow was 16th (2:08.43). 
  • In the 200 backstroke, Isabel Pentony tallied a 10th-place clocking of 2:04.68, while Maddy Reid finished 15th in 2:06.71 and Sasha Casey was 16th at 2:06.77. Each of those times were season-bests.
  • Louise Hay finished as the runner-up in the 100 free consolation final in 52.55, recording a season-best swim by 1.66 seconds.
  • In the 400 free relay, Hay, Hannah Baumgartner, Katz and Avery Maxwell claimed the seventh spot, clocking in at 3:31.56. The quartet of Annika Edwards, Elise Scott, Reid and Grace Nadecki took home 16th place, touching the wall in 3:34.46.
NOTES
  • Katz's 1,650 free effort was her second all-conference effort for the weekend, as she finished third in Saturday's 1,000 free. 
  • Moser tallied a season-low time of 2:06.08 during Sunday morning's 200 fly preliminary swim, bettering her previous clocking by 4.21 seconds.
  • Zottola recorded a personal-best time of 17:55.66 in the 1,650 free.
  • Middlebury finished in the top-three places at the league championship for the 11th time in program history.
  • The team's 1,020 points mark the highest total since the 2017 meet (1,174).
The Panthers will wait to find out the selections for the NCAA Championship when the field is announced for the Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday, February 28. The four-day event will be held from March 20-23 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.
