#17 Women’s Soccer Falls To #18 Amherst In NESCAC Quarterfinals

The #17/fifth-seeded Middlebury women's soccer team fell on the road Saturday to #18/fourth-seeded Amherst 1-0 in the NESCAC Tournament quarterfinals.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked to get on the board at the 13:25 mark of the first half when Fanny Lodge sent a header toward the net, but Mammoth goalie Mika Fisher thwarted her bid. 
  • In the 21st minute, Patience Kum collected the ball at midfield before sliding a pass up to Abby Schwartz who ripped the ball on net. Middlebury goalie Sydney Poppinga was able to get a hand on the bid, but it slipped just past her fingers to give Amherst the 1-0 lead.
  • Halle Hanna fired a shot from outside the box when Poppinga made the diving save to smother her chance with 27:12 expired.
  • Hanna collected a loose ball at the corner of the box for another shot attempt with 40:43 off the clock, but Poppinga made the save, leaping to her right. 
  • The Mammoths manufactured another scoring chance with 13:51 elapsed in the second frame off of a sailing shot by Kum, but her attempt was headed away by Roshann Purcell.
  • The Panthers looked to even the contest when Lucy Patton fired a shot toward Amherst's net in the 70th minute, but Fisher made the diving save to keep it a one-goal contest.
  • Middlebury continued to press, producing another opportunity with 75:36 expired. Kiley Bertos ripped a shot from 25 yards out, but it sailed into the hands of Fisher.
  • Abby Ward's attempt came from outside the box at the 80:42 mark, but Fisher stopped her chance to secure the Amherst win. 
 
NOTES
  • Poppinga recorded four saves. 
  • The game marked Middlebury's 24th appearance in the NESCAC Tournament.
 
The women's soccer team must wait for the NCAA Tournament selections to be announced on Monday, November 11.
