#3 Women’s Ice Hockey Closes Opening Weekend With Triumph Over #10 Continentals

The #3 Middlebury women's ice hockey team tallied a goal in each period to secure a 3-1 victory over #10 Hamilton on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hamilton lit the lamp for the first goal of the contest at the 4:59 mark of the opening period. Sarah Myziuk got enough of a bouncing puck and tucked it past Panther goalie Sophia Will for a 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury countered less than four minutes later. Jordan Hower collected a pass off the boards, eventually finding Olivia Gordon who fired a laser that sailed over Continental netminder Teagan Brown's right shoulder to knot the game at one apiece.
  • The Panther offense continued to test Brown later in the period. Maeve McAdams tried her luck with an attempt that was pushed aside before Kylie Quinlan sent in an attempt that deflected off Brown's chestpad. Molly MacQueen settled and fired seconds later, missing the left post by inches.
  • The visitors peppered Brown about four minutes into the period after Hamilton was called for a penalty. Cece Ziegler guided a shot that was kicked aside by the pads of Brown. Giebler grabbed possession and slid a chance that caused Brown to sprawl out and got just enough to tip it past the right post.
  • Middlebury took its first lead of the contest with 7:51 elapsed in the second period. Britt Nawrocki stepped in front of a Continental pass and grabbed possession. She skated toward the Hamilton goal, lifting a chance that tucked in under the crossbar and gave the visitors a 2-1 edge.
  • Hamilton put together a strong opportunity with 9:14 gone in the third stanza. Grace Crowley secured a blocked shot and tried a wrap-around chance into the bottom-left corner. Will stuffied the chance to force a faceoff.
  • The Panthers added an insurance goal at the 10:37 mark of the period. Sabrina Kim stepped in front of a pass and took off toward the Continental end. Sailing past a defender, she flipped the puck up toward Raia Schluter, who pushed it past an outstretched Brown on the left side to make it 3-1.
  • The Continentals turned up the heat with 2:17 to go in the contest. After a Middlebury turnover, Truchon wristed a chance that bounced off Will's right pad. Truchon grabbed the deflection and had another opportunity that the netminder smothered.
  • Hamilton pulled their goalie in favor of an extra skater with 1:57 remaining and tested Will again with three-consecutive shots over 11 seconds of action. The netminder stood tall, stopping each opportunity to earn the 3-1 triumph and complete the regular season series sweep.
