Men’s Soccer Suffers First Loss Of Season in NESCAC Championship

The second-seeded Middlebury men's soccer team saw its unbeaten season end on Sunday. The Panthers suffered a 3-1 loss to sixth-seeded Connecticut College in the NESCAC Championship at South Street Field.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Camels had the first crack at the goal in the second minute. Sam Boehm grabbed possession and fired just outside the 18-yard box, but Joey Waterman smothered the chance.
  • Matt Scoffone tested the Middlebury defense with consecutive shots during the 13th minute deep inside the box, but both attempts were blocked by the Panthers.
  • The visitors drove deep into their offensive end with a quality chance with 18:19 elapsed. Scoffone collected the ball and fired low left, only to be stuffed by Waterman's chest.
  • Connecticut College struck first at the 21:38 mark. Marco Preugini dribbled past two defenders and laced a shot that sailed past a diving Waterman for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers tallied the equalizer about five minutes later. Colin Dugan whipped in a corner that glanced off the head of Ari Klayman and into the bottom right corner to knot the score at 1-1.
  • Middlebury came on the doorstep of taking the lead in the 32nd minute. Kyle Nilsson wound up and sliced a shot that Camel goalie Peter Silvester deflected to the right. Hugo Horwitz collected the rebound and tried his luck, but Silvester got just enough to steer the ball away from the line to keep the game deadlocked. 
  • At the 35:19 mark, Dugan sent another strong corner towards the top of the box. Nilsson directed the ball towards the center of the goal, only to have it slam off the crossbar and out of play.
  • Connecticut College had the first chance of the second half with a point-blank shot on top of the right post with 48:29 elapsed that Waterman steered away.
  • The Camels retook the advantage in the 55th minute. Boehm sent in a ball that was redirected by Gavin Vanden Berg into the bottom left corner for the 2-1 edge.
  • Klayman almost tied the game up at the 60:18 mark after working past two Camels and firing into the lower 90. Silvester timed his dive perfectly, corralling the chance.
  • Middlebury continued to pepper the goal in the 76th minute. Horwitz readied and sent in a bid that was shooed away by Silvester. Dugan grabbed the rebound but sailed it over the bar.
  • Elliot Spatz tallied the third marker for the visitors less than a minute later by working around three defenders and sending it past Waterman to extend the cushion to 3-1. 
  • Middlebury pushed the envelope with a shot off the head of William O'Brien with 83:04 elapsed, but Silvester came off his line and snagged the bid.
  • The Panthers had one final chance on a corner from Dugan in the 89th minute, but no one could get a touch. Connecticut College would play keep away for the final minute to secure the program's first NESCAC Championship.

NOTES

  • Klayman netted his third goal of the year while Dugan handed out his third assist. 
  • Waterman stopped five shots in the loss for the Panthers.
  • The Camels and Middlebury met for the 42nd time in the all-time series and fourth time in the league tournament.
  • Sunday's appearance in the championship was the 10th in program history.

Middlebury awaits its NCAA Tournament fate when the field is announced on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
