Football Comes Up Short at Bates

The Middlebury football team was edged 21-20 by Bates in the 67th meeting between the teams.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Bobcats struck first, marching down the field on their second possession. Colton Bosselait found Maverick Selementi for a nine-yard scoring strike, and Marcos Ruiz split the uprights for the early 7-0 lead on a drive that spanned 6:48 of action.
  • Just nine seconds into the second quarter, the Panthers cut the deficit to 7-3 when Zach Levy booted a 30-yard field goal.
  • With 3:33 left in the half, Teddy Daniel intercepted a pass by Bosselait and returned the ball 60 yards to the Bates' 20-yard line. With a personal foul on the play, the visitors took over inside the red zone. Cody Weitzman would punch it in two plays later on a nine-yard rushing touchdown, and Levy's kick was good to put Middlebury in front 10-7.
  • As the clock wound down at the end of the second stanza, Bates regained its advantage. Bosselait connected with Sergio Beltran for a 27-yard touchdown reception, and Ruiz followed with the extra point to give the Bobcats a 14-10 edge with 33 seconds left.
  • The Panthers looked to close the gap with just seconds remaining, but Levy's attempt from 48 yards away sailed just wide left, allowing Bates to hang on to the four-point lead at the break.
  • On its first drive of the second half, Middlebury made its way down the gridiron to the five-yard line. The Bates defense held strong, forcing the Panthers to kick a field goal that pinged off the right post and out of bounds.
  • With 6:42 left in the third quarter, Middlebury again marched into to the red zone. The Bobcats denied the Panthers of the endzone twice before Connor McClellan broke the plane for a touchdown and Levy converted the extra point for the 17-14 lead.
  • At the start of the final frame, Bates again clamped down on Middlebury, forcing the squad to kick a field goal. Levy made no mistake, dialing the ball down the middle of the uprights to extend the Panthers' advantage to 20-14.
  • Bates countered once again, as Bosselait hooked up with Ryan Gleason for a 39-yard catch to set up a scoring drive. After a couple of short rushes by Ryan Lynskey, Bosselait found Beltran in the endzone for a 14-yard touchdown. Ruiz was good for the extra point, putting Bates in front 21-20.
  • With 1:18 left in the contest, Middlebury had a final chance to win the contest, but the field goal attempt was short and the Bobcats were able to run out the clock to secure the 21-20 victory.
NOTES
  • With two field goals today, Levy becomes the program record holder with 21 in his career. The previous mark of 20 was set by NFL Super Bowl Champion Stephen Hauschka '07 who is set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame next weekend.
