#12 Women’s Soccer Team Suffers First Loss Of Season To #21 Tufts

The #12 Middlebury women's soccer team fell to #21 Tufts 3-0 on Saturday. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Jumbos got on the board early with 10:06 off the clock in the first half. Nicola Sommers ripped a shot that sailed past Panther goalie Carolyn Kelley into the upper-right corner of the goal to give Tufts a 1-0 lead.
  • The momentum continued for the Jumbos in the 23rd minute. Waverly Sumner's first attempt was blocked by the Middlebury defense, but she regained possession and fired toward Kelley, who punched the ball over the crossbar. 
  • The Panthers looked to score at the 24:44 mark when Joely Virzi ripped a shot from outside the box that was thwarted by Tufts goalie Gigi Edwards. 
  • Lena Sugrue looked to join the score sheet with a bid via a free kick, but Kelley smothered it with 29:18 expired.
  • Gigi Day fired a shot on net with 42:46 elapsed, but her attempt was stopped by Edwards. 
  • In the 53rd minute, Abby Ward raced down the pitch and passed the ball to Mia Feldman, who ripped a shot from outside the box. Edward got enough of the attempt to flick it  above the crossbar and keep Middlebury off the scoreboard. 
  • Lucy Patton took a shot from 20 yards out in the 55th minute. Her bid sailed toward the goal, but Edwards was able to smother it. 
  • Tufts doubled its lead with 58:23 expired. Reese Birch traveled the length of the field and sent a cross over to Sommers. Her bid went just wide of Kelley's foot to give the Jumbos a 2-0 lead. 
  • With 77:36 elapsed, Patton took a shot from outside the box, but Edwards stopped it for her 6th save of the day. 
  • In the 88th minute, Elsi Aires ripped a shot that Kelley got a hand on before it bounced off the crossbar. Aoife O'Reilly picked up the rebound and snuck it past Kelley to secure the 3-0 win for Tufts.
 
NOTES
  • The programs played for the 34th time with the Panthers owning a 15-10-9 advantage in the all-time series.
 
Middlebury travels to Bates on Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff.
